Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones vowed to show up to practice an hour early and stay an hour late after Wednesday's embarrasing performance at Charlotte. The extra work paid off for the All-Star guard.

Jones established season highs with 31 points and eight rebounds and Tim Hardaway had a bounce-back night of his own as the Heat rebounded from the worst offensive performance in franchise history with a 103-95 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jones shot 3-of-16 for seven points in Wednesday's 65-56 loss at Charlotte, committing three turnovers in 40 unproductive minutes before vowing that he would be back with a vengeance.

"I was in this morning at 6:30 working the treadmill and Eddie came in," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Walkthrough isn't until 9:30, so he was early. He was very serious today. He did a circuit in the weight room. He was just very serious, as was Tim. When players feel they embarrass themselves with a bad game they bounce back."

The 6-6, 200-pounder was true to his word, making 8-of-17 shots, all 12 of his free throws and knocking down three 3-pointers, including one from the right sideline that gave the Heat a 98-93 lead with 40 seconds left.

"I came out more aggressive," Jones said. "I wasn't aggressive the past few games. Those last few games I was sitting back. I just want to show that I can play this game at the best of my ability, it was just a matter of me attacking."

Hardaway embarrassed himself on Wednesday, earning an ejection after arguing with officials and tossing several towels onto the court in frustration after managing just seven points on 2-of-11 shooting. Tonight, the fearless point guard was his old self, matching a season high with 26 points and hitting a season-best 6-of-10 3-pointers.

"I needed a game like this," Hardaway said. "To come out aggressive and make shots and make things happen on offense. I got myself going early. We were playing harder, running harder and making a conscious effort to get easy baskets. I think you'll see more of this during the season."

Miami matched Wednesday's total in the first half and eclipsed 100 points for just the fourth time this season.

"To allow a team that's struggled recently to score 103 points, it's going to be hard to win a game like that in their arena," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said.

Andre Miller matched a career high with 28 points for the Cavaliers, who have lost two in a row since a season-high six-game winning streak. Cleveland lost center Zydrunas Ilgauskas to an injured left foot in the first half after the 7-3 pivotman collected 14 points in 22 minutes.

Matt Harpring scored 15 points but just two after the first quarter for the Cavs, who shot 49 percent (35-of-72) but proved no match for the red-hot backcourt duo of Jones and Hardaway. The tandem hit 17-of-35 shots and 9-of-17 3-pointers.

Anthony Mason had 18 points and seven boards for Miami, which shot 45 percent (31-of-69) and forced 19 turnovers.

Jones scored 19 first-half points as the Heat clung to a 56-52 lead at intermission, drawing a loud ovation from the 15,854 fans at the American Airlines Arena.

Miller hit a 10-footer to get the Cavs back within 60-59 less than three minutes into the second half. But Hardaway made a layup, Jones hit an 18-footer and Hardaway connected from 17 feet before Jones' 3-pointer opened a 69-61 lead midway through the third quarter.

Hardaway made 3-pointers on consecutive trips later in the third quarter to give Miami a 78-68 lead and Mason and A.C. Green made baskets to help the Heat to an 82-70 lead entering the fourth period.

The Cavaliers would not go away, closing to 95-93 on Harpring's free throws with a minute to play. But Miami continued to excellent ball movement it displayed all night on the ensuing possession and Hardaway found Jones alone on the right wing for the clinching 24-footer.

"I had a wide-open shot that I missed earlier," Jones said. "I was upset, so on the last shot I stayed home and made that shot."
