Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- John Amaechi scored 26 points as the Orlando Magic used a big first quarter to post a 111-92 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Amaechi, who made 11-of-14 shots, scored 16 points in the opening period as Orlando jumped out to a 33-19 lead. He had 10 of the Magic's first 16 points and the 26 were one shy of a season high, set on November 19 against Portland.

"John Amaechi was big tonight," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "He knew we were going to get him down low, give him the ball, and they didn't double-team him early."

"He came in late for shootaround and I think we've got to make an exception for him to do that all year," Orlando guard Tracy McGrady said. "He was doing it all. You've got to just keep feeding the guy."

McGrady added 17 points, nine rebounds and eight assists despite making only 5-of-18 shots. Bo Outlaw also had nine rebounds to help the Magic to their third straight win.

"You look at Tracy McGrady's numbers and you see 5-for-18, but what you miss are eight assists," Rivers said. "He sets the table. By him setting the table and everybody else getting involved, it was huge."

Orlando led 81-63 after three quarters and by as many as 24 points in the final period. The Magic placed six players in double figures, including Darrell Armstrong with 13 and Pat Garrity with 12. Orlando made 22-of-26 free throws, including 7-of-8 by McGrady.

"It's always good when we have a game in control and all the players, the first unit, the second unit, everybody's playing well," Amaechi said. "It takes all the pressure off."

Matt Harpring led Cleveland with a season-high 22 points in his first game against his former team. The Cavaliers have lost three straight after a season-high six-game winning streak.

"We got flat outworked tonight," Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman said. "In the start of the game, they beat us down the floor. Our guys weren't running and weren't fighting in the post. We can't let things continue to slip. And we've had some slippage, definitely. It's cost us on this trip."

Chris Gatling tied a season-high with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Clarence Weatherspoon added 18 and nine rebounds and Andre Miller dished out 10 assists for Cleveland.

Both teams played shorthanded. Grant Hill sat out for Orlando to rest his left ankle while Cleveland was without center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who injured his left foot in Friday's loss at Miami.

"We were playing very well as a team," Harpring said. "Now, with a slight thing like having `Z' out and a new guy in the lineup, it was different. We are so used to `Z.' We know his game and he knows our game. We will regroup and come back."
