Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jason Terry hit the go-ahead basket with 1:28 remaining and Matt Maloney came up with a big defensive play in the final minute as the Atlanta Hawks topped the slumping Indiana Pacers, 91-87, for their third straight win.

Terry's driving bucket snapped an 87-87 tie and Atlanta still had a two-point lead with 46 seconds left, when Maloney tied up Travis Best as he penetrated the lane. The Hawks controlled the ensuing jump ball and Roshown McLeod made a short baseline jumper with 22 seconds to play and the shot clock winding down.

"It's a matter of my teammates finding me in good situations, swinging the ball. We are looking for each other," McLeod said. "Some shots went in and out early, but you have to make them when they count. That's what I did tonight."

Lorenzen Wright scored 22 points and Terry added 19 for Atlanta, which had not won three in a row since January 22-28.

"I feel great for the guys. They hung in there and made big plays down the stretch -- defensively at key times, big buckets at key times," said first-year Hawks coach Lon Krueger. "So many different guys contributed. It was a good team win. It's great to go into Christmas like this."

Jalen Rose netted 22 points and Jermaine O'Neal chipped in 19, but the Pacers (12-16) suffered their third straight loss and fell four games below .500 for the first time since the end of the 1996-97 season.

"Until we can come up with that one rebound, that one smart play at the end of the game, we just have to learn how to keep making those plays," said Indiana coach Isiah Thomas. "Right now, whenever we need that rebound, we don't come up with it. It's just want, it's just desire. When you get down to the end of the game, there's not much tinkering you can do. You put your best players out there and we go with what we have."

"It's really hard to put your finger on it," Best added. "The biggest thing is defensively we're just not getting stops. We did play some good defense. They got a lot of second shots and that hurt us a lot down the stretch."

Both teams made only seven field goals in the final period as Indiana shot 39 percent and Atlanta clicked at 37 percent.

The Hawks had a 76-72 lead after three quarters, but the Pacers tied it three times before taking their final lead at 83-82 as O'Neal made 1-of-2 free throws with 5:14 left.

"They played hard and we played hard in spurts," O'Neal said. "I think a night like tonight, I ended up hurting my team more than helping. I only had six rebounds tonight, so I'll kind of put it on my shoulders. I didn't do my job."

Dikembe Mutombo scored eight of his 12 points in the first quarter, when Atlanta took a 27-20 lead. He also finished with 17 rebounds and three assists.

The Hawks extended their advantage to eight points before Austin Croshere's 3-pointer capped an 11-2 spurt that put the Pacers in front, 36-34, five minutes into the second quarter.

But Atlanta regained control with a 12-2 run and took a 56-50 halftime lead.

McLeod contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who shot 46 percent (37-of-80) and had a 46-37 rebounding advantage.

"When you're playing a tough game like that, your energy level just rises up. It was a very emotional win for us," Terry said. "We've been working so hard in practice and to execute it out on the court is just great. The team is very confident right now as we taste success."
