Game StoryMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Finishing strong is something John Stockton, Karl Malone and the Utah Jazz have been doing better than anyone else for years. Tonight was no different.
Stockton scored eight of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and Malone had eight of his 19 in the final period as the Jazz used an 11-5 closing run to finish off the Minnesota Timberwolves, 98-92.
Trailing 74-62 entering the fourth quarter, the Jazz found a way to finish their grueling six-game road trip with a flourish, pulling out a fourth straight win after dropping the first two games on the eight-day trek.
Stockton, 38, and Malone, 37, helped cut the deficit to 90-87 before pushing the Jazz ahead to stay. Stockton buried a 19-footer from the left sideline before Danny Manning and Bryon Russell combined to make six free throws, giving Utah a 95-90 lead with 32 seconds to play.
"I think that we have the ability to play very well, and it would be nice if we did it for 48 minutes," Stockton said. "But if we can do it in the fourth (quarter) and eke out a couple of victories, then that's a plus for us."
Malone added two more from the line with 25 seconds left and the Jazz had won on the road for the 11th time in 15 tries.
"I don't think we played particularly well but we got a win on the last game of a six-game road trip against a team that needed a win," Malone said. "We gutted it out for a win. It's kind of neat to see the guys rally together. It's kind of a neat way to end it."
Kevin Garnett and Terrell Brandon scored 17 points apiece for the slumping Timberwolves, who have lost four in a row for the first time since February 9-16. Minnesota managed just seven baskets in the fourth quarter and only two -- both by Wally Szczerbiak -- in the final four minutes as the Jazz took control.
"Games like this, we've got to learn to close," Garnett said.
Russell scored 18 points, hitting all 12 of his free throws, and Donyell Marshall and Manning added 13 and 11, respectively, off the bench for Utah, which outscored Minnesota, 30-12, at the line.
Szczerbiak scored 13 points for the Timberwolves, who shot 49 percent (34-of-69) and held a 40-33 advantage on the boards. Minnesota yielded 24 points off 18 turnovers.
"We've struggled at the beginnings of fourth quarters," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We've got to find a way. We're not scoring at the beginning of the fourth quarter and it's imperative to score so we can keep the lead."
The Wolves jumped out to a 30-17 lead after one period behind eight points by Garnett but struggled on offense thereafter. The lead swelled to 33-17 early in the second period before the Jazz came storming back, closing to 47-43 at the half behind nine points from Malone and eight from Stockton.
"As poor of a start as we had, I thought that our guys sucked it up and tried to give us every opportunity to win the game," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "People buried us before this trip."
Minnesota appeared to pull away for good when Garnett and Brandon sparked an 11-4 run to close the third quarter, giving the Wolves a 74-62 lead before Malone and Stockton again imposed their will on the contest.
