Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd scored his team's final 12 points, including the go-ahead basket with 12.7 seconds remaining, lifting the Phoenix Suns to a 97-95 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

After Mike Bibby's jumper put Vancouver ahead by six points with 2:11 left, Kidd took over. He hit a 3-pointer and added a basket to cut Phoenix's deficit to 91-90.

Vancouver center Bryant Reeves hit a jumper but Kidd answered with a 21-footer. Bibby made two free throws but fouled out on the other end as Kidd converted a three-point play to tie the game at 95 with 44.2 seconds to go.

Kevin Edwards missed a layup on Vancouver's next possession, and Kidd put Phoenix ahead when he followed Shawn Marion's missed layup with a tip-in.

"It was do or die," Kidd said. "The last play Shawn Marion had a great look and he just missed it. I was just lucky to be standing in the right position at the right time to tip it in. I took some shots -- the 3-pointer -- to get things started. That's when I felt that it was time to take control of the game."

After the Grizzlies called a timeout, Michael Dickerson drove the lane but was cut off. He dished off to Edwards, whose 3-pointer hit the front of the rim with 1.9 seconds left. After Phoenix knocked the rebound out of bounds, Othella Harrington missed a scoop shot that came just after the buzzer.

"It was a run for Mike D," Edwards said. "He was supposed to come off and create so he drove to the middle and they doubled him. So I tried to get open and he passed it to me. I took the shot and it didn't go down."

Kidd scored 15 of his 28 points in the second half and had 10 assists and six rebounds. Rodney Rogers added 17 points off the bench and Marion and Tony Delk each had 12 for the Suns, who have won consecutive games since a three-game losing streak.

"We would have not won the game if not for him," said Phoenix coach Scott Skiles about KIdd. "And that is exactly what I told the guys on my team. We did what is the norm for us this year, lay down once we got a big lead. We just put the ball in Kidd's hands and he was able to make all the big plays tonight. He rose up tonight. He saw us struggling, and as great players do, he stepped up."

Phoenix evened its road mark at 6-6, and has held its last 11 opponents to below 100 points.

Bibby had 21 points and seven assists and Dickerson contributed 19 points for the Grizzlies, who have lost nine of their last 10 overall and six of seven at home. They continued to struggle against fellow Western Conference teams, dropping their eighth in a row for a 4-15 mark overall.

"It's hard to sit up here and say I'm happy with things because I felt again that we should have won the game," said Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe after his team fell to 1-7 in games decided by three points or less. "The last two minutes of the ballgame we were in control and they made plays, we didn't make a play. But their guy Jason Kidd stepped up and did what he was supposed to do and took it upon his shoulders."

Vancouver's last win against a conference foe was a 109-106 double-overtime triumph over the Suns on November 29. The Grizzlies have now lost 12 of their last 13 meetings with Phoenix to fall to 3-18 all-time.

The Suns scored the game's first seven points but Vancouver battled back and held a 20-19 lead after the first quarter. The Grizzlies were outscored, 30-15, in the second quarter as Phoenix took a 14-point lead -- their largest of the game -- into halftime.

Vancouver shot 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from the field in the third quarter to close within 68-66 heading into the fourth.

"Again we had a big lead at halftime and somehow we have to figure out what is wrong with our third quarters," Kidd said. "We couldn't put the ball in the basket. They shot 70 percent in the third quarter alone. Any time a team does that they are definitely going to cut into your lead or take the lead."

Cliff Robinson had 11 points and seven assists for the Suns, who shot 50.7 percent (38-for-75) and scored 27 points off 19 turnovers by Vancouver.

"Jason made some wonderful plays down the stretch and he made some big shots," Robinson said. "We were able to stop the Grizzlies a few times down the stretch and our transition helped us get some easy shots."

Reeves, Harrington, and Isaac Austin chipped in 12 points apiece as the Grizzlies also shot 51 percent (37-for-73) and made 20-of-22 free throws. Harrington grabbed 12 rebounds for Vancouver, which held a 38-28 advantage on the boards.

Vancouver's Shareef Abdur-Rahim came in averaging a team-leading 20 points and 9.8 rebounds but collected just 10 and five, respectively.
