Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks finished the way they started, poorly.

The Minnesota Timberwolves made their free throws down the stretch, using a 9-1 run to close the game en route to an 88-81 victory over the Hawks.

Atlanta entered the game with a season-high four-game winning streak but looked more like the team that lost 10 of its first 11 games this season early on. The Hawks went the first 4 1/2 minutes without a basket, falling behind by double digits.

But the Hawks gathered themselves and had an 80-79 lead with 2:49 remaining following two free throws by Jason Terry, who finished with 31 points.

Atlanta reverted to its earlier form thereafter, missing its last four shots from the field. Terry hit a technical free throw with 60 seconds left for the Hawks' only points during that stretch.

"It (31 points) doesn't mean anything when you lose," Terry said. "Statistics are fine and dandy, but when you can't come away with a win in a close ballgame, it doesn't matter. We let one slip away."

"It was a heck of a ballgame," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "I thought the Timberwolves made the plays down the stretch to get back into the game."

The Timberwolves went 7-of-8 from the free throw line over the last 2:37, including making two technical foul shots after Atlanta was whistled for a pair of illegal defenses.

Anthony Peeler scored 22 points and Kevin Garnett had 21 and 12 rebounds for the Wolves, who have won consecutive games following a four-game skid.

"It's always easier to be the team to come back and have to gain the momentum," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We made some plays down the stretch. We played intelligently, and that's what you have to do."

Garnett, who made 11-of-15 free throws, made 1-of-2 from the line with 2:28 left, giving Minnesota the lead for good, 81-80.

Veteran Dale Ellis made a jumper -- the Wolves last basket -- to extend to a three-point lead with 1:52 left. Terry answered with his technical free throw 52 seconds later for the last Atlanta point.

The Hawks were called for their third illegal defense of the game with 47 seconds left and Brandon converted from the line.

Brandon, who had 14 points and eight assists, and Wally Szczerbiak each made two free throws over the final 21 seconds to seal it for Minnesota, which went 25-of-29 from the line.

Despite falling into an early 10-0 hole, the Hawks battled back to tie the contest after one quarter and held a 40-39 at halftime behind 15 points from Terry, who made 6-of-7 shots in the half.

A five-footer by Jim Jackson gave Atlanta its biggest lead, 63-55 with 1:35 left in the third quarter. But Peeler scored six points in an 8-4 spurt to help the Wolves close within four entering the final period.

Peeler made 8-of-14 shots from the field in 29 minutes off the bench. He led the Wolves' reserves as they outscored Atlanta's backups, 39-13.

The Wolves carried the momentum into the fourth quarter and opened a 76-70 advantage with 6:42 left on two free throws by Garnett.

Each team struggled from the floor. Atlanta shot 41 percent (31-of-75) and the Wolves finished at 40 percent (31-of-77).

After grabbing an NBA season-high 28 rebounds at New Jersey on Tuesday, Atlanta center Dikembe Mutombo had another big effort tonight with 20 boards. He helped the Hawks to a 50-35 edge on the glass. The 7-1 center also collected his 2,500 career blocked shot in the game.
