Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Chris Webber scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Sacramento Kings defeated the Charlotte Hornets, 91-87, in a clash of division leaders.

The Hornets had their season-high seven-game winning streak snapped in the opener of a six-game road trip.

"We're not going to win them all," Charlotte guard David Wesley said. "As long as we are putting out that kind of effort, we'll win our games. Each team played good defense and they made the baskets and got the stops when they needed them."

Charlotte center Elden Campbell missed the game with an elbow problem.

"We were under a lot of adversity. The big fella wasn't there and we still hung tough," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "If we continue to play like this, we'll win our share."

Sacramento went ahead for good on Peja Stojakovic's three-point play with 4:20 left that gave the Kings an 84-83 lead.

Derrick Coleman's 10-footer with 2:14 to play brought Charlotte within 88-87, but a dunk by Vlade Divac restored a three-point advantage for Sacramento.

The Hornets had one last chance to tie, but Jamal Mashburn missed badly on a 3-point attempt with three seconds left. Bobby Jackson added one free throw for the final margin.

"That was the look I wanted -- I just missed it short," Mashburn said.

Charlotte also committed two turnovers in the final two minutes.

The Kings improved to a franchise best 20-7, eclipsing the start of the 1951-52 Rochester Royals. Their 13-1 record at home is the best since the 1949-50 Royals won their first 23 at home.

Stojakovic scored 18 points despite 7-of-19 shooting. Divac added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Kings, who shot 43 percent (35-of-82).

Baron Davis had a spectacular game, with 21 points, 11 assists and six steals for Charlotte. Mashburn scored 11, but made just 4-of-17 shots.

P.J. Brown and Mashburn each had 13 rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 40 percent (33-of-82). No Sacramento opponent has shot 50 percent or better.

Charlotte made just 3-of-15 3-point attempts as Mashburn missed all four of his.

The game was tightly contested throughout with 12 lead changes and nine ties. The Hornets used a 13-2 run in the third quarter to take a 66-61 lead, with Davis scoring seven points during the spurt.

Sacramento came out strong and led 27-20 after one quarter. Webber had 12 of his points in the first 12 minutes.

The Kings' Scot Pollard and Hidayet Turkoglu both missed the game with sprained ankles.
