Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Vince Carter lived up to his nickname when his 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds remaining gave the Toronto Raptors a thrilling 94-93 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Often called "half man, half amazing," the high-flying Carter took a pass from Mark Jackson on the wing and swished the 27-footer to give Toronto the lead with under five seconds to play.

"That's not the play coach drew up, but I just took the shot and got lucky," Carter said. "Lenny (Willens) told me to focus and shoot my shot. I'd rather win the game than score 50 points."

"Unbelievable," Nuggets forward Antonio McDyess said. "It seems like there's no pressure on him (Vince). He has no conscience. I wasn't surprised."

With 1.9 seconds to go, Alvin Williams stole George McCloud's intended lob pass for Antonio McDyess, allowing the clock to run out on the stunned Nuggets.

Denver's three-game winning streak was stopped. The Nuggets fell to 6-3 in games decided by three points or fewer and 6-3 against the Eastern Conference.

Carter, who went 11-of-27 from the field, added five assists and went 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Jackson finished with a season-high 17 assists and 11 points.

Williams hit a pair of foul shots to give the Raptors a 91-89 edge with 38.2 seconds to play after Carter's layup knotted the game at 89-89 with 1:04 to go.

Williams scored 10 points off the bench and Corliss Williamson added 16 for Toronto, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

"We got great play from different guys," Wilkens said. "We can't let them have two and three shots at the basket, particularly in the fourth, we took care of that.

"Vince believes he's going to make his shots and if has good open shots, we want him to take them."

The Raptors used a 12-4 run to start the fourth and build an 81-77 lead with 6:57 to go. But McCloud's 3-pointer gave Denver a one-point lead.

The Raptors battled from six down with 2:31 to play before the break. Carter started the run with a layup and Williamson tied it at 49-49 before Toronto went down 51-49 at the half.

Toronto is 14-4 in games decided by three points or fewer and a game above .500 at 15-14.

Toronto's Antonio Davis and McDyess both came in averaging double-doubles. McDyess had 22 points, 12 boards and tied a career high with seven assists. He outshined Davis, who only scored six points but had 14 rebounds.

Carter has at least 20 points in 22 of the 24 games he has played.

"I had to keep shooting," Carter said. "I got myself a little down. I had open shots and I was missing and I had to try to stay confident. At the end, I felt like we were going to win it or lose it but not go to overtime."
