Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones continues to sizzle, and he's carrying the Miami Heat with him.

Jones scored 31 points for the third time this week, lifting the Heat to a 98-91 victory over the reeling Washington Wizards.

Tim Hardaway's runner capped a 12-4 run and gave Miami a 92-85 lead with 84 seconds to play. Jones and Hardaway each made two free throws in the final 35 seconds to nail down the Heat's fourth straight win.

"I started the game off messed up," Jones said. "I blame myself because I was not attacking and finishing. We knew we had to make a stand defensively."

Hardaway finished with 25 points, marking the first time he and Jones both topped 20 in the same game. Anthony Mason chipped in 19 points and 11 rebounds, helping Miami move a season-high three games over .500.

"It was tougher than it had to be," Hardaway said. "But they played hard. They played with a lot of effort and they make things happen. We tend to play to people's record, but we got the `W' tonight."

Richard Hamilton converted a three-point play before Michael Smith's layup trimmed Washington's deficit to 94-90 with 25 seconds to go.

"We are all NBA players," Hamilton said. "We all know we have to step it up, we just have to pick it up and take it to another level."

Juwan Howard scored 19 points and Hamilton added 17 off the bench for the Wizards, who have lost six straight and 15 of their last 16 games. Chris Whitney, filling in for suspended point guard Rod Strickland, chipped in 16 points.

"It is frustrating because we thought we won the game," Whitney said. "And to lose it at the end like that is very frustrating."

Washington had a 41-27 rebounding advantage but coughed up 14 points on 15 turnovers to fall to 5-25 this season.

"We are never going to give up," Whitney said. "We are always going to come out and play aggressive, and that is what we did tonight."

"One positive thing that I think we can take out of the game is that we are always keeping our head up," Hamilton added. "Every game coming in we think we can win. Hopefully, we will turn it around."

The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter after the Wizards led most of the opening period. Miami shot a season-high 65.2 percent in the second quarter and tied it four times before before Hardaway's runner in the lane made it 45-45 at the break.

The Heat committed a franchise-low five turnovers, just one in the first half for another record. The previous record of six turnovers was set many times, most recently against the Los Angeles Lakers on December 19.

Washington fell to 2-23 when scoring fewer than 100 points.

"They had shots that were bouncing off the goal and going in," Wizards coach Leonard Hamilton said. "That's what a high level of concentration will do for you. We had some miscues at the end and there lies another loss."
