Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- It's not easy to have a letdown against the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Coming off Thursday's emotional overtime victory at Utah, the Portland Trail Blazers had little trouble walking over the lifeless Grizzlies, 104-81, behind 20 points off the bench by Arvydas Sabonis.

"We certainly weren't going to take Vancouver lightly," said Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy.

Portland had won its previous eight home games against Vancouver and tonight was no different. The Trail Blazers outscored the Grizzlies, 25-16, in the second quarter for a 46-37 halftime lead and never looked back.

Sabonis led six players in double figures for the Blazers, who have won four in a row and eight of 10. Rasheed Wallace and Bonzi Wells scored 14 points apiece for Portland, which improved to 11-3 at home.

"I thought the bench gave us some big minutes tonight," Dunleavy said of his team's 45-20 advantage in bench points. "Of course, (Sabonis) was part of that with his 20 points. He has been feeling really good lately and I did plan to use him for about 24 minutes tonight even though he played big minutes last night in Utah."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 29 points for Vancouver, which has lost four in a row, 10 of its last 11 and nine straight against Western Conference foes.

"I do think there's a fine line between winning and losing in this league," Abdur-Rahim said. "There's things you have to do to win games. If you don't do them, you won't win."

Scottie Pippen scored 12 points and Damon Stoudamire and Stacey Augmon added 10 apiece for the Blazers, who shot 55 percent (46-of-84) and held a startling 46-28 rebounding advantage. Portland scored 22 points off 21 turnovers.

"Portland was too big, too strong and too efficient," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "They executed the way they are supposed to. They made the passes and they hurt us on the boards. And they beat us in the paint."

"We came in here and definitely need to get this victory," said Stoudamire, who scored a season-high 32 points, including nine in overtime, at Utah. "It was one of those games where we were a little sluggish, but we did what we had to do."

After complaining about his playing time against the Jazz, Dale Davis started at center and had nine points and six rebounds in 26 minutes. But it was the 7-3 Sabonis who had the hot hand off the bench. He made 9-of-12 shots, both of his free throws and handed out seven assists in only 24 minutes.

"Arvydas Sabonis is so smart and gifted," Lowe said. "He's a very, very intelligent player."

Michael Dickerson scored 11 points and rookie Stromile Swift added 10 off the bench for Vancouver, which shot 47 percent (34-of-72).

After battling to a 21-21 tie after one period, the Grizzlies took the lead when Dickerson made a jumper to open the second quarter. Sabonis answered with a three-point play and added a pair of layups as Portland sprinted out to a 34-27 lead with 6:43 left before halftime.

Swift and Abdur-Rahim made consecutive baskets, but Shawn Kemp responded with a layup and Sabonis dunked before a basket by Wallace and Kemp's 22-footer made it 42-31 with 3:25 left in the first half.

"I think we were in there for a minute," Vancouver point guard Mike Bibby said after scoring seven points on 3-of-10 shooting in 35 minutes. "They stepped it up every quarter. We just didn't step it up when we had to. They are one of the best teams in the NBA."
