Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Antonio McDyess collected 35 points and 14 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets recorded a 120-113 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, who had a four-game winning streak stopped.

"I don't want anything to detract from the fact that this was a big win for us." Denver coach Dan Issel said. "It's difficult to play hard when you're up 26 points. It's human nature to let down."

Denver held Milwaukee to two field goals in the final three minutes while making six free throws. But both teams set season high totals in points for the year.

The Bucks made a late run and cut their deficit to 106-102 on Ray Allen's 3-pointer with 3:05 remaining. But Glenn Robinson missed a pull-up jumper with 1:13 to go and Hunter was off with a baseline jumper with 54 seconds left.

McDyess then dunked off an alley-oop pass, giving the Nuggets a 111-102 lead.

"I had to get pumped up after that alley-oop," McDyess said. "I screamed to their bench and wanted to let them know that it wasn't going to be easy."

Nick Van Exel knocked down two free throws with 31 seconds to play to give Denver a 118-108 lead. The Nuggets did all of their scoring over the final 1:45 from the foul line.

Hunter's 3-pointer with 12.9 seconds to play set the final margin. It followed Robinson's bucket that briefly cut the lead to eight points.

Robinson scored 20 of his 31 points in the second half and 14 in the fourth quarter. Allen finished with 26 and Hunter contributed a season-high 24.

Milwaukee fell three games behind first-place Charlotte in the Central Division.

Four Bucks fouled out and guard Sam Cassell did not make the trip for family reasons, leaving coach George Karl with only seven available players.

"We came out happy and filled with Christmas," Karl said. "Most teams have a bad game at the holidays and we had one. You don't want to know about the game plan and how poorly it was executed. We took yesterday off. We probably should've practiced."

The Bucks were whistled for an NBA season-high 41 personal fouls, passing their own mark of 39 set at Toronto.

"We sorely needed Sam Cassell," Allen said. "He sets the tempo for us. I said to myself, `If we only had another quarter, we'd have a chance to win.' We only did it to ourselves."

The Nuggets led by as many as 26 points and improved to 11-5 at home. They set NBA season highs with 60 attempts from the foul line, sinking 48 of them for 80 percent.

"It was a big win for us," Raef LaFrentz said. "McDyess had one of his typical performances. We're getting used to him putting up 30 points and 15 rebounds each night. If those aren't All-Star numbers, I don't know what is."

McDyess posted his 21st double-double this season.

After George McCloud's foul shot, McDyess dropped in four from the line to extend the Nuggets' lead to 57-31 with 5:49 to play in the second quarter. McDyess scored 11 of his 20 first-half points in the second period.

Milwaukee got within 20 points but Van Exel made two from the line to send Denver to the locker room with a 69-43 bulge.

Issel was ejected midway through the third quarter for arguing a call.
