Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs were in an angry mood and made the Indiana Pacers pay for their embarrassing performance on Thursday.

Malik Rose collected 20 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season as the Spurs posted an 89-77 victory over the Pacers.

Following their 105-104 loss to Chicago, coach Gregg Popovich and David Robinson accused the Spurs of being soft. San Antonio responded by holding Indiana to its lowest point total of the season.

"All wins are big for us and every game is a big game for us because it's our next game," Rose said. "I think the Chicago game put a lot of things in perspective for us and made us wake up to the fact that we weren't playing as physical and as strong as we need to."

"I'm very happy with the defense," Popovich added. "That's who we are. We made the stops when we needed to make them and that's what wins basketball games but we haven't been consistent on the road."

The Pacers helped the Spurs by shooting just 50 percent (11-of-22) from the foul line. They shot only 39 percent (32-of-83) from the field, their worst effort of the season.

Robinson chipped in 15 points for the Spurs, who took the lead for good during a 21-10 run that ended the second quarter. San Antonio, which has won six of its last eight games, turned a 27-23 deficit into a 44-37 halftime lead.

"In a game where we hold Robinson to 15 points and (Tim) Duncan to eight, we should win the game but we let others get away from us," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said.

Jalen Rose scored 20 points to lead the Pacers, who have dropped seven of their last nine. They are 1-4 at home against Western Conference opponents after a 14-0 mark last season.

"We must do a better job in all phases of the game," Indiana guard Travis Best said. "We are not playing as a team. We've got to go back and re-think the individual efforts that we're putting in and be sure it's the best for the team."

Derek Anderson also had a double-double for the Spurs with 11 points and 10 rebounds. San Antonio's reserves outscored Indiana's bench, 44-29.

"We really wanted to come out and play a lot better defensively," Robinson said. "Just be more assertive defensively. Last game, we let Chicago shoot 53 percent against us and score 100 points. We were determined tonight to come out and try to be more of the team that we are."

The Spurs shot 46 percent and featured balanced scoring with five players reaching double figures. Terry Porter scored 12 points and Danny Ferry added 10 off the bench.

"We feed off Malik's energy that he brings to the floor," Robinson said. "He did a very good job defending Jalen Rose and we need that kind of effort from him."

The win improved the Spurs to just 6-9 on the road, compared to a 13-2 mark at home.

"I don't know what's happening to us on the road," Rose said. "Maybe the hotels are putting something in our food for the pregame meals."

Indiana closed to 48-46 on Reggie Miller's two foul shots with 7:03 left in the third quarter, but the Spurs used a 13-4 spurt to build a 61-50 cushion on Steve Kerr's 19-footer with 3:12 left in the period.

San Antonio broke it open early in the fourth period, opening a 78-60 lead Anderson's 18-footer with 7:35 left. Indiana got no closer than 11 thereafter.
