Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Vince Carter did his usual number on the Phoenix Suns, but Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion and rookie Paul McPherson made sure he did not escape America West Arena with a victory.

Kidd scored 27 points and Marion and McPherson added 20 apiece as the Suns took Carter's best shot and got right up, posting a 109-103 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Carter, who had scored 35 and 51 points in his previous two meetings with the Suns, hit 11-of-26 shots and an NBA season-high 22-of-27 free throws, grabbing six rebounds and handing out six assists in 44 spectacular minutes.

"It took me about 10 pro games to shoot that many (free throws) in my prime," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Vince got 46, but I thought we made it hard on him."

But Kidd, Marion and McPherson, a 22-year-old guard out of DePaul, helped the Suns to their highest point total of the season and their third win in four games. Phoenix bounced back from Thursday's humiliating 115-78 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Forty-six points," Kidd marveled at Carter's output. "I was trying my best (to guard him) and hopefully, he'll agree I made him work for every point that he had. But the biggest thing is that I had to come back and take advantage of the fact that they're going to entice me or want me to shoot from outside. I just had to knock down some shots."

McPherson made the most of his 17 minutes, hitting 9-of-10 shots and 2-of-3 free throws. Kidd had nine assists, six rebounds and hit 13-of-15 free throws without committing a turnover in 41 minutes. Marion grabbed eight boards and keyed a 16-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters, putting Phoenix ahead for good.

"I felt like I was back at DePaul for a minute," McPherson said. "It felt like a college game. I got out there, made a few things happen and coach had a little confidence in me."

Cliff Robinson scored 18 points and Tony Delk added 15 for the Suns, who made half of their 76 shots and committed just seven turnovers.

"We have been under 16 turnovers the last 12 games or so," Skiles said. "We have come back from averaging 19 early in the season. That is a big key for us."

Charles Oakley scored 17 points and Mark Jackson added 16 for Toronto, which shot 44 percent (31-of-71) and held a 39-35 rebounding advantage. The Raptors yielded 21 points off 15 turnovers.

Forwards Tom Gugliotta of Phoenix and Corliss Williamson of Toronto were ejected after a brief skirmish in the second quarter.

"You hate to see those things because the officials overreact after those things to both teams," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "It took our momentum away because then they're calling every touch and to me, it just destroys the game. I wasn't real happy with the way the game was called."

Trailing by 13 points, the Suns suddenly came to life after the fight. McPherson hit a 10-footer and Kidd followed with a 24-footer before two more baskets by the rookie got Phoenix within 37-30.

"It helped them because Googs of this year hasn't really been Googs of the past," Oakley said. "And Corliss was playing well for us."

McPherson made a free throw and knocked down another jumper before Delk's 3-pointer shaved the deficit to 40-36 with 2:12 left in the first half.

McPherson had 17 first-half points, one fewer than Carter, as the Suns stayed within striking distance at 50-45.

"Our bench gave us a real big lift with their energy," Marion said. "And they set the tone for us the rest of the game. We played like that the rest of the game, and that's how we're going to need to play."

Oakley's jumper with just over two minutes left in the third quarter gave Toronto its final lead, 72-70, before the Suns took control.

Delk hit a 3-pointer, Robinson connected from 16 feet and Marion made a 21-footer and two free throws as the Suns took a 79-72 lead into the fourth quarter.

Robinson and Elliot Perry hit back-to-back jumpers and McPherson converted a three-point play -- his only points of the second half -- to make it 86-72 with 10:10 to play.

Carter made four free throws, a 3-pointer and fed Oakley for a 22-footer from the right sideline. Antonio Davis' layup with 5:32 to play made it 93-88 with 5:32 left.

Carter made an 18-footer, four more from the line and a 26-footer as Toronto drew within 101-99 with 2:14 to go. But Kidd drained a seven-footer and four free throws down the stretch as the Suns held on.

"For a long time, we've been in that predicament," Carter said. "We can't get down, let other teams get momentum and then have to fight back. Because when it comes down to crunch time, the last five minutes, guys just wear down."
