Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- With Shaquille O'Neal looking on from the sidelines and Kobe Bryant in the locker room, Horace Grant made a follow shot with 4.5 seconds left in overtime as the Los Angeles Lakers edged the Los Angeles Clippers, 116-114.

"We did a nice job at the end of the game without our two impact players," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We had a lot of our other guys step up and make nice plays."

O'Neal had 29 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out with 1:27 left in regulation and the Lakers leading, 100-98.

"It was an ugly game tonight, but we came out with the win," O'Neal said. "Grant, Brian Shaw and Rick Fox played solid and did the job for us."

Bryant had 17 points but was ejected with 1:52 left in the third quarter when he drove to the basket, expected a foul call, and received two technicals. He was in the locker room when his team defeated the Clippers for the 16th straight time.

"We've talked to Kobe about letting the game come to him and not forcing anything," Jackson said. "But he's young and still learning, so it will eventually come to him."

The Clippers scored five points in the final 10 seconds of regulation. Eric Piatkowski nailed a 22-foot jumper from the right sideline with 8.8 seconds left to make it 103-101 and Sean Rooks tied it with a layup with half a second on the clock.

Lakers guard Ron Harper missed a shot at the buzzer.

Piatkowski's basket at the start of overtime gave the Clippers their first lead at 105-103, but Robert Horry scored nine of his 13 points in the extra session.

"It was just coming to me in the flow of the offense," Horry said. "Then, when I hit the off-balance 3-pointer, it felt good. So then I just kept shooting."

"Without Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant in there, Robert Horry stepped up and did a great job for them when they needed baskets," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "He came through for them."

After Jeff McInnis put the Clippers on top 113-110 with a 20-foot jumper with 1:29 left, Shaw's basket cut the deficit to a point and Horry's jumper gave the Lakers a 114-113 advantage with 25 seconds to go.

Piatkowski knotted it up again with a free throw with 12 seconds left but could not connect on the second. At the other end, Grant grabbed two rebounds before tipping in the go-ahead basket.

With one second left, Clippers forward Lamar Odom drove the lane and was clobbered by several Lakers, although no foul was called.

"It could have went both ways," said Horry, who was credited with a blocked shot. "A lot of times when a guy is driving in, he tries to draw the contact, and I kind of moved out of the way."

Fox scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half and Grant contributed 12 and eight rebounds for the Lakers, who have not lost to the Clippers since a 97-95 setback on March 14, 1997.

"We were confident about our chances of executing on both ends of the floor," Fox said. "Ron made some huge baskets and everyone else on the team stepped up in the second half."

The Lakers have won seven of their last eight games and are tied with Sacramento for first place in the Pacific Division.

Piatkowski finished with a season-high 27 points and rookie Darius Miles had 17 and a career-best 12 rebounds for the Clippers, who have dropped three in a row.

"Some of my shots were going up pretty well, I was pretty consistent tonight," Piatkowski said. "I got a couple of good ones in a row, especially in overtime. We're playing good basketball right now, we're right there in every game. When we get over the hump, we'll be winning a lot of games."

Although the Clippers' skid vs. the Lakers matches the longest against an opponent in the NBA, two of their three defeats this season have come by a combined seven points.

"They played well, they played hard and they hit their shots," O'Neal said of the Clippers. "Overall, it was a good effort on their part."

The Lakers, whose largest lead was 13 points in the first quarter, owned a 95-87 advantage with 6:16 left in the fourth. But the Clippers went on a 11-3 run, tying the game on a tip by Rooks with 3:05 left.

"We had a good amount of control of the game in the first half, but the Clippers managed to cut into our lead," Jackson said. "Eric hit some shots and before we knew it we had a game on our hands."

Statistically, the game was as even as it could be. Both teams shot 49.5 percent, grabbed 48 rebounds and scored 50 points in the paint.
