Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Antonio Daniels was questionable with a strained right Achilles tendon. There was no doubt about his play.

Daniels scored 19 points and made all the big baskets to lead the San Antonio Spurs to an 80-72 victory over the Miami Heat, who had their season-high winning streak snapped at five games.

Daniels sat out Saturday's victory at Indiana with the injury and it was not known whether he would play until minutes before the game. But he got the start and in a defensive struggle made 8-of-12 shots from the field.

"I felt a lot better when I got here today," Daniels said. "When I got out there I told them I wanted to play."

"Before the game the doctors and assistant coaches checked him out," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They felt he was not in any danger. He said he felt good. We'll see tomorrow if it tightens up on him. If not, great."

The fourth-year guard's most spectacular shot came at the end of the first half and gave the Spurs the lead for good. With the score tied and just seconds remaining, Daniels took an inbounds pass, dribbled right and launched a 50-footer that swished through at the horn, giving San Antonio a 41-38 lead.

"Tonight, I had a couple of desperation shots, one at half-court and one at the shot clock," Daniels said. "My shot feels good, feels comfortable. It was a good team effort, a good win."

Daniels' clutch shooting and the "Twin Towers" helped the Spurs hold on for their seventh victory in nine games. David Robinson had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Tim Duncan added 15 and 10 for San Antonio.

"I thought the guards were the difference," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We did a decent job on Tim and David but every time we got close a timely shot from their backcourt would keep us down."

"(Daniels) was huge for us," Robinson said. "He hit some big threes with the clock winding down. It's great to have him back. He adds great athleticism and plays at a high tempo."

Eddie Jones scored 18 points and Tim Hardaway added 15 for the Heat, which fell to 1-13 all-time in San Antonio. Miami shot under 37 percent (30-of-82).

"We just didn't do anything right," said Jones, who twisted his ankle in the fourth quarter. "The only thing we did was play hard. Sometimes when you play hard, the effort keeps you in the game."

The Spurs carried the momentum from Daniels' shot into the third quarter. The Heat pulled within 51-50 on Hardaway's jumper with 5:23 remaining but Daniels made a jumper to trigger an 8-0 run that he capped with a dunk for a 59-50 lead with 1:25 left.

San Antonio took a 59-53 lead into the final quarter and jumpers by Malik Rose and Daniels widened the advantage to double digits.

A jumper by Anthony Mason cut the deficit to 67-64 with 4:36 to go but Daniels responded with a 15-footer. Robinson added a layup and an alley-oop dunk from Duncan around a jumper by Jones for a 73-66 lead with 1:47 to go. Derek Anderson added two foul shots to seal it 32 seconds later.

"It was good to get a win against Miami, a team similar to us defensively," Daniels said. "We made good decisions down the stretch."

Anderson had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Spurs, who shot 47 percent (31-of-66) and were battled to a 40-40 deadlock on the boards.

Mason had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Brian Grant added 12 and 10 for the Heat.
