Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks lost their first game under interim coach Donn Nelson, absorbing a 107-104 setback to the Detroit Pistons in a game they never led but had a chance to win.

Steve Nash had two wide-open looks at the basket in the final seconds but missed both potential tying 3-pointers.

Nelson took over for father Don, who is scheduled to undergo surgery for prostate cancer Thursday in Salt Lake City and is expected to miss one to two months. This was supposed to be the elder Nelson's last game but he chose to hand over the reins one game early.

"Coach (Don Nelson) did not react very well to some of his medication," the younger Nelson said. "He just left and is preparing himself for the operation."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 33 points, helping the Pistons control the game until the fourth quarter. But Dirk Nowitzki almost singlehandedly rallied Dallas, scoring five points in 12 seconds to tie the game, 102-102, with 2:27 to go.

But Nowitzki, who finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds, missed two free throws and Stackhouse made a jumper with 1:37 remaining. After Michael Finley's layup tied it again with 40 seconds to play, Stackhouse sank two free throws with 25 seconds left, putting Detroit ahead to stay.

He added another free throw after Nash missed a jumper and the Pistons survived Nash's two shots from beyond the arc.

Dallas outscored Detroit in each of the final three quarters, but could not make up the nine-point lead the Pistons held after the first quarter.

"The first quarter defensively we were in a funk," Dallas forward Michael Finley said. "Offensively we didn't have things going and when you have those two things going against you, it is tough to come out of the hole we dug ourselves."

Stackhouse has led Detroit in scoring in each of the last 14 games. Joe Smith, who considered joining Dallas before signing with Detroit, added 28 points and 15 rebounds and Ben Wallace pulled down 14 boards to go with 10 points.

"When you play catch-up, like we did, especially with the greatness of Stack, it makes it tough," Donn Nelson said.

Stackhouse pulled down seven rebounds and dished out eight assists.

"I think that this is Jerry's best game of the year," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "He was good defensively and they went to him, they double- and triple-teamed him and he found people and knocked down the shots."

The Pistons snapped a three-game losing streak and a three-game road skid.

"It's a huge win for us because we just got through playing our worst stretch of the year," Stackhiouse said. "To start the year off with a win on a road trip, that's a good thing. If we didn't get this win that spiral down may have continued. Hopefully it stopped here."

Finley scored 35 points and Nash added 22 and nine assists for Dallas, which dropped to 1-3 without the elder Nelson. Assistant Del Harris went 1-2 while Nelson sought treatment options last month.

The Mavericks, who rank third in the NBA from 3-point range, made 7-of-25 attempts.

"That's one of our weapons, our 3-point shots," Finley said. "We were not forcing them, we just weren't making them."

Shawn Bradley scored five points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked six shots for Dallas. Tensions ran high late in the game when two fights nearly broke out, both involving Bradley.

Early in the fourth quarter, he nearly came to blows with Detroit center Mikki Moore after getting tangled up diving for a loose ball. Down the stretch, it was Stackhouse going chest-to-chest with Bradley after the two battled for a rebound.
