Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Tony Delk had a rough night after a career day but he will take the result.

Delk managed just 10 points after putting up an NBA season-high 53 in an overtime loss Tuesday but the Phoenix Suns prevailed anyway, posting a 90-85 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Delk more than doubled his previous career high on 20-of-27 shooting at Sacramento less than 24 hours before going 4-of-10 from the floor in 32 minutes Wednesday.

"After last night, I knew (coach Scott Skiles) wasn't going to play me much," Delk said. "I was trying to do other things. I'm not trying to come back and duplicate what I did. We're glad just to get the win. Usually, you get a day off after a big night. I didn't and I couldn't sleep at all last night."

Cliff Robinson scored 21 points and Jason Kidd added 12 and 11 assists as the Suns beat the Clippers for the 13th time in 14 meetings and avenged a 98-88 loss at Los Angeles on December 15.

"Obviously, I am pleased with the result," Skiles said. "You have to be careful in this back-to-back kind of game in not expecting too much from the guys. We didn't get in until 3:30 in the morning. I am very happy with the win under the circumstances."

The Suns improved to 13-4 at home, including 9-2 against Western Conference opponents.

"It definitely feels good to get a win," Robinson said. "Everybody did a really good job at blocking out the fact that we lost a tough game last night and we just came in and put a solid game together."

Lamar Odom scored 24 points for the Clippers, who were coming off Tuesday's 110-97 win over Toronto. Los Angeles has lost four of its last five games.

Jeff McInnis scored 17 points and Sean Rooks added 12 for the Clippers, who shot 42 percent (30-of-71) and slipped to 3-12 away from the Staples Center. Los Angeles has lost eight of its last 10 visits to America West Arena.

"There was some big time rebounds we gave up," Odom said. "They determined the game, especially a close game like this. That's the way they play. They have five players averaging double figures. They've got some players who can play who came out and put the ball in the bucket tonight."

Shawn Marion scored 11 points and Rodney Rogers and Tom Gugliotta added 10 apiece for the Suns, who shot 46 percent (33-of-72) and yielded 20 points off turnovers.

"We just stuck together, we felt that we were missing a lot of shots we normally make, things weren't going great for us," said Gugliotta, who was suspended for Tuesday's game due to a fight with Sacramento forward Corliss Williamson on Sunday. "It was unbelievable, the excitement of being in a game in the fourth quarter was something I haven't felt in a long time."

Like Delk, Los Angeles rookie Darius Miles also had a tough follow-up to a brilliant performance Tuesday. Miles scored a season-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Raptors but managed just eight on 4-of-12 shooting Wednesday.

Knotted at 65-65 entering the final period, the teams battled back and forth down the stretch until Robinson buried a 3-pointer to give Phoenix an 80-76 lead with 5:48 to play.

Miles answered with a dunk nearly two minutes later but Kidd had a layup and another basket to make it 84-78 with 2:52 left. McInnis hit a 3-pointer before Gugliotta made a layup and Kidd and Delk combined to make four free throws, sealing the win for Phoenix.

"(The Clippers) have beaten us once already, so we didn't have too much time to think about last night's loss," Kidd said. "This was a big game coming off a tough loss."

The Suns used a 9-0 run to start the second half, opening their biggest lead at 57-44. The Clippers came right back with a 19-5 burst to take their first lead of the contest, 63-62, with 1:55 remaining in the third period.
