Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Eddie Robinson scored a career-high 21 points as the Charlotte Hornets snapped a four-game losing streak with an 86-73 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
Robinson, who came off the injured list earlier Friday, also grabbed eight rebounds. He got the start in place of the injured Jamal Mashburn, who was out with an inflamed left knee.
"I think that they didn't really defend me that tough," Robinson said. "I was roaming a lot and they were double-teaming our big guys. I was able to find my corner shot and get rebounds. I didn't think that I would start. When I learned that Mash couldn't go I started getting focused. Guys were looking for me and I wanted to knock the shots down."
"Eddie hadn't played much," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "He had a good practice yesterday. Once he gets started, he can score in bunches. Missing Mash, I didn't know what to expect so he really picked up the slack."
Elden Campbell scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to aid Robinson's effort. David Wesley added 17 points for the Hornets, who improved to 1-4 on their six-game road trip, which concludes on Sunday in Denver. Silas said that Mashburn is not expected to play in that game.
Baron Davis had a strong return to his hometown with nine points and eight assists.
"He was letting the game come to him tonight," Silas said. "He was getting everyone on the whole team involved. I think he had an all around good game."
Charlotte used a 12-0 run late in the second quarter to take command of the game. Robinson and Wesley each scored four points during the burst that gave the Hornets a 40-28 lead. The Clippers mustered just 11 points in the second.
The third quarter was even worse for Los Angeles as Charlotte scored the first five points for a 47-30 advantage. Robinson's slam off a feed from Baron Davis gave the Hornets a 59-35 cushion with 3:11 to go.
The Clippers then displayed their youthful resilience and rallied in the fourth quarter. Michael Olowokandi's jumper with 4:27 left capped an 8-0 run that cut the deficit to 73-62.
But Robinson and Davis answered with back-to-back jumpers to help stem the tide and restore a 15-point margin.
Lamar Odom pulled Los Angeles within eight points, hitting a 3-pointer with 80 seconds to play. After Robinson missed a wild shot, Campbell followed with a slam that put Charlotte up by 10 and the Clippers did not score thereafter.
Los Angeles, which shot 38 percent (27-of-71), was held to its lowest scoring output of the year.
Odom led the Clippers with 23 points and Jeff McInnis added 14. Rookie Darius Miles scored nine points and had a career-high eight blocks for Los Angeles, which has lost five of its last six games.
"When things don't go right, you just have to keep your poise," McInnis said. "If we had just been more patient in the first three quarters, our run late could have pulled it out."
The Clippers were missing two regulars as swingman Corey Maggette (upper respiratory infection) and rookie guard Keyon Dooling (gastrointestinal infection) both were out.
The Hornets, who shot 43 percent (34-of-79), have won the last seven meetings with the Clippers.
