Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- David Robinson scored 19 of his 29 points in the first half and grabbed 22 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs coasted to a 108-101 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

It marked the 12th time Robinson surpassed 20 points and 20 rebounds in the same game and the first time he accomplished the feat since January 26, 1996 against Portland. His career high is 24 rebounds.

"He was amazing," Spurs guard Antonio Daniels said. "He got us off to a great start right off the opening tip. Tonight he did some things, like the crossovers, that I'd never seen him do before."

"There is a reason why David Robinson is one of the greatest players off all time, and he showed it out there tonight," Detroit coach George Irvine added.

The contest was not as close as the score indicated. Robinson helped San Antonio open a 15-point halftime lead, a margin it maintained heading into the fourth quarter. Detroit got no closer than the final margin.

Tim Duncan added 24 points and Derek Anderson 17 for the Spurs, who have won eight of their last 10 games, including three straight since a 105-104 loss at Chicago.

"I think as a team we have picked it up," Robinson said. "The guys on the floor have really picked it up."

"I'm pleased with the aggressiveness and the focus tonight," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich added. "The guys were very serious and competed well. Detroit is a fast-paced team and they get the ball up and down the court. I'm pleased with the play on both ends of the court."

San Antonio used an 11-0 spurt in the first period to turn a two-point deficit into a 19-10 lead. After building a 33-26 cushion after the first quarter, the Spurs allowed just 13 points in the second to grab a 56-41 halftime cushion.

"It was really good to see David have his legs tonight," Anderson said. "He was real aggressive and really attacked the rim."

With Duncan and Robinson dominating inside, the Spurs outrebounded the Pistons, 55-41. Duncan pulled down 13 rebounds.

"It was pick your poison as far as double-teaming Duncan or Robinson," Irvine said. "They scored a ton a points in the paint and we didn't have an answer to stop either of them."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 34 points but made just 10-of-30 shots for the Pistons, who dropped two of three on their swing through Texas. Stackhouse averaged 36 points on the road trip.

"You're not going to stop him," Popovich said. "You just hope he doesn't shoot a great percentage. The guys that guarded him tonight did a good job. They made it tough for him to find people, and when you limit everyone else it works in your favor."

Chucky Atkins added 19 for Detroit, which has allowed more than 100 points in six straight games, losing five of them.

"We're scoring points, that's not the problem," Pistons center Eric Montross said. "But if you can't keep the other team from scoring, that's a problem. Our guys are not bad defensively. It's just a matter of who wants it."

"We have to get better defensively," added Irvine. "We can't score 101 points and lose. That's a rarity in this league."

Daniels, who was listed as questionable with a strained right Achilles tendon, scored 16 points.

San Antonio forward Sean Elliott went to the locker room with a strained right shoulder with 5:55 remaining in the fourth period and did not return.
