Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Charlie Ward made his contribution count.

Activated from the injured list before the game, Ward scored seven points in a decisive third-quarter run as the New York Knicks extended their season-high winning streak to seven games with a 103-87 rout of the hapless Washington Wizards.

Ward missed the last 20 games since undergoing arthroscopic right knee surgery on November 27.

In the starting lineup despite not playing since November 21, Ward did not score until drilling a 3-pointer with 6:04 left in the third quarter. That triggered a 12-0 run that gave New York a commanding 79-55 advantage.

Ward finished with seven points and handed out four assists in 23 minutes.

"I'm just glad to be back and contribute in some way," he said. "I just wanted to play hard, play efficient and play defense. My biggest worry was that the team would be out of sync when I was out there. But we did a good job of keeping it in sync."

Marcus Camby scored 21 points and Allan Houston 19 for the Knicks, who led by as many as 25 in the fourth quarter while improving to 3-0 against Washington this season.

"I think it's hard to win a lot of days in a row in this league," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We usually don't go on long losing streaks or long winning streaks. This has obviously been a good streak for us and hopefully it will continue."

Juwan Howard netted 27 points and Tyrone Nesby 22 for the Wizards, who have won just seven times in 35 games this season.

Ward followed his 3-pointer with a jumper and a 14-footer around a technical free throw by Houston. Houston hit another technical free throw and a shot from behind the arc, giving New York a commanding 79-55 advantage with 4:17 left in the third quarter.

The technicals were called on Wizards coach Leonard Hamilton, who was ejected for the first time.

"These are the types of games that you learn from and grow from," Hamilton said. "I think we are getting better. We just had a difficult time putting it together tonight."

The Knicks took their biggest lead at 84-59 with 2:02 left in the fourth quarter following a layup by Larry Johnson, who finished with 15 points and six rebounds.

Kurt Thomas added 13 points and Erick Strickland and Latrell Sprewell 11 apiece for New York, which shot 50 percent (36-of-72).

New York limited the Wizards to 49 percent (37-of-75) from the floor and held its 28th straight opponent under 100 points.

Camby did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 14 points, as New York built a 57-47 advantage at the break. Howard had 14 points and Nesby 13 at halftime for the Wizards.

Chris Whitney added 13 points and eight assists and Richard Hamilton had 12 and six for the Wizards, who fell to 1-10 against Atlantic Division teams and 3-16 on the road.
