Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets learned you cannot keep Antonio McDyess down for long.

McDyess scored eight of his 33 points late in the fourth quarter and Voshon Lenard hit a key 3-pointer as the Denver Nuggets matched a season high with their fourth straight win, 94-87 over the Hornets.

With McDyess struggling to find his shooting touch, Charlotte went ahead 79-76 with 8:41 remaining on consecutive baskets by Elden Campbell and Eddie Robinson. But Robert Pack hit a long jumper to put Denver back on top before Charlotte guard Baron Davis made a free throw to tie it at 80-80 with 6:24 left.

After both teams went scoreless for more than two minutes, McDyess took over. He put Denver ahead for good by banking in a shot with 3:50 remaining, then doubled the lead 44 seconds later by putting back Lenard's 3-point miss from the right corner.

"They were double teaming my quickly," McDyess said. "They had help from the weak side every time the ball was in the air. I just had to post up and hit my turn-around shot."

Charlotte's P.J. Brown made 1-of-2 free throws to slice the deficit to three, but McDyess followed a miss by Nick Van Exel with 2:30 left for an 86-81 advantage. He put away the game 47 seconds later by slamming down an alley-oop pass from George McCloud.

McDyess hit 14-of-23 shots and added 16 rebounds for his eighth straight double-double and 14th in the last 15 games. He has scored at least 30 points seven times this season.

Lenard and McLoud added insult to injury by hitting 3-pointers with the final 66 seconds of the game. Lenard finished with 14 points, including a season-high four 3-pointers.

"We had a couple of big plays down the stretch tonight," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "They did a good job of double-teaming McDyess in the third, but we were able to hit a few big shots down the stretch."

Denver is riding its first four-game winning streak since December 14-22 and moved a season-high four games over .500. The Nuggets have also won nine of their last 11 to move within three games of first-place San Antonio in the competitive Midwest Division.

The Nuggets also extended their home winning streak to six games, improving to an impressive 14-5 here this season.

"When we step on the court, we expect to win," McDyess said. "It was just tough tonight for both teams. The energy level seemed down and the fans weren't all the way into it and that effects the way we play."

Robinson scored 18 points and Davis 15 for Charlotte, which completed a 1-5 road trip to fall to 9-11 away from home this season. The Hornets, who shot just 37 percent (31-of-83), have seen their lead in the Central Division shrink to 2 1/2 games over Milwaukee.

"With Jamal (Mashburn) out, I have to step up my game," Robinson said. "I've been playing well the last two games. The biggest thing tonight was we slowed them down. We made a couple of miscues down the stretch and just didn't have it at the end."

Mashburn, the team's leading scorer at 20 points per game, is suffering from an inflamed left knee.

Raef LaFrentz scored 20 points as Denver shot 44 percent from the floor (38-of-87).

"It was an ugly win," LaFrentz said. "The game had no rhythm to it. My shot was feeling pretty good. I think the difference now is that every night, we're having a different guy step up."

The Nuggets needed someone like LaFrentz and Lenard to produce because point guard Nick Van Exel was limited to just two free throws, going 0-for-10 from the floor.

"Our game plan worked pretty well," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We kept Nick Van Exel off balance and the rest of their people, except LaFrentz, out of the game. Down the stretch, we double-teamed McDyess, but we had some letdowns. He came over our back for a couple of tip-ins and a spin lob and beat us."

Denver took advantage of some shoddy Charlotte shooting early and jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead, with McDyess scoring four points apiece during the spurt. The Hornets missed seven of their first eight shots.

"I'm confident from the start of the game and I want to start out fast," McDyess said. "The chemistry is good right now and we are playing together as a team."

Charlotte began to find its shooting touch late in the first quarter and cut the deficit to 23-20 on two free throws by Lee Nailon. But Denver scored six of final seven points in the session to take a 29-21 lead.

The Hornets took their first lead of the game with 6:49 remaining in the first half when Robinson hit a 17-foot jumper that made it 39-38. But the Nuggets answered with eight straight points, with four coming from McDyess, and took a 50-46 advantage into the break.

Denver lead by as many as seven points in the third quarter, sparked by McDyess' 16-foot turn-around jumper with 1:46 left for a 74-67 lead. But Jamaal Magloire made two free throws and Brown added a long jumper to close within three entering the fourth.
