Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- For the first time in nearly four years, the Los Angeles Clippers had all the answers for their crosstown rivals.

Lamar Odom scored a season-high 29 points on 13-of-18 shooting as the Clippers snapped a 16-game losing streak against the Los Angeles Lakers with a convincing 118-95 victory.

Odom also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists for the Clippers, who defeated the Lakers for the first time since March 14, 1997. They came close to ending the streak eight days ago before losing in overtime, 116-114. But Odom scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to help the Clippers pull away on Sunday night as they matched their most lopsided win of the season.

"I don't know what to feel," Odom said. "I'm kind of at a loss for words for what this win can do for us. Even though you guys just take it as another game, we all really know it's just not another game. So far, it's the biggest game of the year for us."

Rookie Quentin Richardson added 16 points and Cherokee Parks had 13 for the Clippers, who ended a three-game road losing streak with only their seven win in seven contests overall.

"I'm happy. I thought we played great," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "I thought everybody we stuck in there played great. ... They have the best center and the best player in the NBA. Our goal is to play hard every night and hope that eventually we can get to the level they are.

"It was a great win for us, not because they are in the same city as us but because they are the world champions."

The Clippers also got a spark from 5-5 guard Earl Boykins, who was activated from the injured list before the game and chipped in 11 points and three assists.

"I don't think anybody on our coaching staff or any of our players were surprised at Earl's play," Gentry said. "He's a heck of a player. He's just had a lot of little nagging injuries. It hurt us not having Keyon (Dooling), but we were able to plug Earl in there, and I thought Earl did a great job."

Shaquille O'Neal led all scorers with 33 points for the Lakers but fouled out for the third straight game. Kobe Bryant added 27 points but made just 10-of-24 shots as the defending NBA champions had a three-game winning streak stopped and lost for only the second time in 10 outings.

"They outscored us in almost every aspect of the game," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Their shooting was great, their bench was terrific, we couldn't stop anybody off his or her bench. I think the stats are pretty obvious -- they beat us on the boards, they beat us on the paint, they beat us in the field."

The Clippers never trailed after Odom's short hook shot broke a 13-13 tie with 5:50 left in the first quarter. He had seven points in the opening period, when the Clippers shot 65 percent from the field (13-of-20) and built a 30-20 lead.

A driving layup by Corey Maggette gave the Clippers a 38-26 cushion early in the second quarter, but O'Neal and Brian Shaw made jumpers around a dunk by Bryant as the Lakers climbed within 48-45 with 97 seconds to go before halftime.

It turned out to be as close as the Lakers got as Eric Piatkowski and Maggette converted layups around two free throws by Boykin, enabling the Clippers to take a 54-47 lead into intermission.

They stretched the advantage to 17 points midway through the third quarter and shot nearly 62 percent (13-of-21) in the period before settling for an 88-73 bulge entering the fourth.

O'Neal and rookie Darius Miles traded dunks in the opening seconds of the final period, establishing a pattern. After Robert Horry made a layup for the Lakers, Parks hit a driving layup to give the Clippers a 93-78 lead.

Shaw drilled a 3-pointer, but Boykins made a driving layup 23 seconds later.

O'Neal made four straight free throws to trim the Lakers' deficit to 10 points, but Odom sandwiched a pair of baskets around Horry's 10-footer jumper. A three-point play by O'Neal with 6:48 left was answered by a free throw by Maggette.

After missing four straight free throws, O'Neal dunked off a feed from Bryant to make it 100-92 with 5 1/2 minutes left. But Maggette was 1-of-2 from the line, Odom hit a long jumper and a 3-pointer and Maggette dunked to put it out of reach at 108-92 with 1:57 remaining.

"It was the way we finished," Odom said. "We executed down the stretch and you could see we were in control, which comes from losing a couple of games like this. Hopefully, we'll continue to mature. If we get blown out tomorrow, the respect from this win will be gone."

Seven players scored in double figures for the Clippers, who shot 56 percent (46-of-82) from the field and had a 47-33 advantage off the boards. Their bench outscored the Lakers' reserves, 45-12.

The Lakers shot 43 percent (34-of-79). Shaw made 3-of-6 3-pointers, but the rest of the team was 0-of-13.
