Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Jim O'Brien's presence on the sidelines could not cool down one of the NBA's hottest teams.

Scottie Pippen scored 22 points and Damon Stoudamire added 21 as the Portland Trail Blazers won their eighth straight game, 98-90 over the Boston Celtics.

"We all came to play in the second half," Pippen said. "We just weren't taking smart shots and turning the ball over in the first half. We were playing good and taking good shots in the second half."

Boston lost its sixth straight and its first under O'Brien, who made his debut after Rick Pitino announced his resignation as coach-president earlier in the day.

"There really wasn't much of a difference between going out there as a head coach and going out there as Rick's associate coach," O'Brien said. "How much he delegates and prepares his assistants made me pretty comfortable."

Paul Pierce hit a 3-pointer 61 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Boston a 75-71 lead. But Portland scored eight straight points, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Steve Smith, to take the lead for good.

After Pierce made three free throws with 5:54 left to draw the Celtics within 84-82, the Trail Blazers scored eight of the next 10 points to put away the game.

"We flirted with disaster for a while there," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We were able to get into the open court and were able to finish off some plays in the second half. We were down by 10 points and we got off the jet. The jet lag wore off."

Smith scored 17 points and Rasheed Wallace and Shawn Kemp each pulled down 12 rebounds for the Blazers, who opened a five-game road trip. They are 8-3 in their last 11 away from home.

Portland converted 26-of-32 free throws and forced 22 turnovers, leading to 22 points. Wallace had 15 points and blocked four shots.

Pierce led Boston with 25 points and a season-high six steals. Antoine Walker added 17 points and 11 rebounds, making only 7-of-28 shots. The Celtics scored just 18 points on 6-of-21 shooting in the final quarter.

"It felt kind of weird (without Pitino) for the first time," Pierce said. "But no matter what, we've got to regroup. We still feel we have a shot. If we don't turn the ball over, we win the game."

Bryant Stith made all five shots from the floor to finish with 13 points and Vitaly Potapenko added 12 for Boston, which shot 43 percent (38-of-89). The Celtics made just 3-of-18 3-point attempts.

"I think if Rick were standing here right now, I think the guys would have played extremely hard," O'Brien said.

Boston led by as much as 11 points in the third when Stith made a 3-pointer with 7:47 left. But Wallace and Stoudamire had four points apiece during an 8-1 run as the Blazers went into the fourth trailing, 72-69.

The Celtics took a 46-44 lead at halftime behind 13 points by Walker. Pippen had 11, all in the first quarter, to pace Portland, which has won 12 of its last 14.
