Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers tried their best to give the New Jersey Nets the game but managed to stay above the .500 mark with a 92-90 victory.

The Cavaliers led by 13 points late in the third quarter, but the Nets chipped away and had a chance to win on a long jumper by Stephon Marbury, whose desperation shot from the left corner was short.

"I took the shot and missed," Marbury said. "If I had tried to drive, I would have stepped out of bounds. I was just trying to gather my feet and shoot the ball. All my momentum was going out of bounds."

Cleveland built its 13-point lead on the strength of Robert Traylor, who scored 10 of his 14 points in the third quarter.

The Cavs had their lead shrink throughout the fourth but still had a chance to ice the game three times with under a minute to play.

After Aaron Williams made two free throws to cut Cleveland's lead to 90-88, Clarence Weatherspoon was fouled rebounding a miss by teammate Andre Miller and made only 1-of-2 from the line.

Rookie Kenyon Martin then knifed his way under the basket for a pretty follow up to cut Cleveland's lead to 91-90 with 34 seconds left.

The Cavaliers took another shot at clinching the victory when Lamond Murray launched a 3-point attempt from deep in the right corner, but he came up short and Keith Van Horn pulled down the rebound for the Nets.

After a timeout, Van Horn missed a 3-pointer. But the Cavs again left the door open as former Net Keith Gatling was fouled and made only 1-of-2 from the line, with Van Horn again claiming the rebound with 2.5 seconds left.

Following another time out, the Nets had problems inbounding from halfcourt, leading to Marbury's desperation 3-point attempt.

"For us it was a good win," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "We needed to get a win, especially in a close game. We lost our last three games by close scores.

"The last play of the game, Weatherspoon made a great switch out on Marbury and he's got to shoot over a 6-8 guy instead of a 6-2 guy, and that was big."

Murray had 22 points and 10 rebounds while Traylor added nine boards to his 14 points off the bench for Cleveland.

"We all have rolls on this team," Traylor said. "When my time comes, I just take the opportunity and run with it. But for now, I'm going to stay in my roll and try to win games."

Gatling, who was forced to start at center due to numerous injuries, had 15 points and eight rebounds. Weatherspoon added nine points and 14 boards as the Cavaliers outrebounded New Jersey, 49-37.

"It was just something I had to do for the team," Gatling said. "Coming off the bench is my strong point. It's a little different. My warmup is a little different and I have to change some things I do before the game."

Marbury had 27 points and nine assists while Van Horn, in only his second game since returning from a broken leg, scored 17 points and added seven rebounds in 34 minutes off the bench.

Martin had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Nets, who have won just four of their last 31 trips to Cleveland.

"We did an awful job of getting back," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "The two things we emphasized in the meeting were transition defense and rebounding. We got our butts kicked in both departments."

Despite being shorthanded, the Cavs had a three-game home losing streak snapped. They played without Matt Harpring and rookie center Chris Mihm as well as Wesley Person and Bimbo Coles, who are on the injured list.

"My Mom and Dad came in town for the week," Wittman said. "And I go home and my Mom's back has gone out on her. My Mom's even getting hurt."

New Jersey, which defeated Golden State on Saturday, still has won consecutive games just once this season.

Cleveland has won three straight over New Jersey, including an 86-82 victory on October 31 that spoiled Scott's coaching debut.
