Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- For the Los Angeles Clippers, the runner-up proved harder to beat than the champion.

One night after snapping a 16-game losing streak to the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, the Clippers rallied from a 16-point deficit against the Indiana Pacers but eventually fell to last year's finalists, 85-82.

Jalen Rose scored eight of his 18 points in the final five minutes as Indiana turned up the defense down the stretch.

After the Clippers took a 77-70 lead with 5:23 left on Earl Boykins' jumper, the Pacers went on a 13-2 run. Rose cut the deficit to two points with a 3-pointer and knotted the game at 77-77 with another basket with 2:53 to go. His 20-foot jumper 34 seconds later gave the Pacers a two-point advantage.

Lamar Odom -- playing with a sore left wrist -- made two free throws for a 79-79 deadlock, but Rose scored again with 1:25 remaining to put Indiana ahead for good. Austin Croshere added a layup for a four-point cushion.

Jeff McInnis' basket with 21 seconds left pulled Los Angeles within 83-81, and Rose connected on only 1-of-2 free throws. Cherokee Parks made the first of two from the line for the Clippers with 7.4 seconds, but his second effort was grabbed by Indiana's Derrick McKey, who was fouled and made one of two free throws.

"It was a matter of continuing to execute our game plan," said Rose, who also pulled down nine rebounds. "When the game is close, you often find ways not to execute your game plan. We found guys to get the open shots and created mismatches. It's ironic that I made that 3-pointer the way I've been shooting. I was just trying to be aggressive and fortunately they just went down."

With one second left, Odom tried a 3-pointer from the left sideline but hit the front of the rim as the buzzer sounded.

"Jalen Rose hit big shots down the stretch," Odom said. "Seven points is not a big lead in this league, especially when your offense isn't clicking. It was little offensive rebounds here, a missed layup here."

Jermaine O'Neal had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Croshere finished with 13 points off the bench for the Pacers, who improved to 3-1 on their season-high six-game road trip while recording consecutive wins for the first time since December 8-9. They have won 13 of their last 14 meetings against Los Angeles.

"I think the NBA, each team, is going to make a run no matter what the score it," O'Neal said. "They made their run in the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter. But we did our job of staying composed and made a run late in the game to get the victory."

"We had a good lead but they came back, played well and took control of the game," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas added. "We just wanted to hang around and stay in the game and give ourselves a chance to win. You have to give them credit. The Clippers came our and played hard."

McInnis had 17 points and seven assists and Odom collected 13 points and seven rebounds for the Clippers, who lost for the sixth time in their past eight games.

"This was a tough one," McInnis said. "We got behind early and came back to lead most of the game. Then to come up short in the fourth quarter -- we just let it slip away. It hurts. We felt like we were in control of the game. It seems like we know how to finish games sometimes and sometimes we don't."

Indiana jumped out to a 15-3 lead at the start of the game. With 6:38 left in the first quarter, Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry sent out a new starting five to the scorers' table. But with replacements looming, the Clippers' starters went on an 8-2 run that pulled them within six points.

"We weren't embarrassed because we're on the same team. but when you see five guys coming in, it means you're not getting the job done," Odom said. "So we knew we had to turn it up."

A new starting five did take the floor with 3:26 left and the Pacers closed the quarter with a 10-4 spurt.

Indiana owned a 39-23 advantage with 6:43 left in the second quarter before Los Angeles scored 10 of the next 14 points to cut the deficit to one with 28 seconds remaining on Michael Olowokandi's hook shot.

The Clippers were down by three points at halftime, but began the third quarter with 14-6 run, taking a 57-52 lead with 6:35 left on another hook shot by Olowokandi, who finished with 12 points.

Travis Best had 12 points and six rebounds and Reggie Miller chipped in 11 points for Indiana, which shot 45 percent (33-for-74) from the field.

Rookie Darius Miles contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Clippers, who shot 39.5 percent (34-for-86) and gave up just four points on eight turnovers.
