Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The battle between best and worst in the Central Division produced an unlikely result.

David Wesley scored 21 of his 28 points after halftime as the Charlotte Hornets rallied from a 19-point deficit late in the third quarter before outlasting the Chicago Bulls, 102-95, in the first triple-overtime game in franchise history.

Wesley's foul shot snapped a 95-95 tie with 1:54 remaining and was part of a game-ending 8-0 run for the Hornets, who were glad to be back in the friendly confines of the Charlotte Coliseum following a 1-5 road trip.

But Charlotte, which has won 12 straight at home, played with little energy for three quarters and the Bulls appeared to be in control, opening a 63-44 lead with 2:58 left in the period. Chicago scored just 11 points over the final 15 minutes of regulation.

The Hornets again were without leading scorer Jamal Mashburn, who missed his third straight game due to an inflamed left knee.

Elden Campbell picked up the slack with 18 points and P.J. Brown added 11 for the Hornets, who erased deficits in each of the first two extra sessions.

Elton Brand scored 30 points and Ron Mercer had 27 for the Bulls, who took their last lead, 95-94, on rookie Khalid El-Amin's baseline jumper with 2:48 to play.

However, El-Amin committed two critical turnovers in the final two minutes. After Wesley intercepted El-Amin's pass, the Hornets got a break when Ron Artest was called for a deliberate foul while tripping Wesley from behind.

Wesley hit the tiebreaking foul shot before Campbell made two more on the same possession 18 seconds later. Wesley clinched the victory by hitting a jumper that made it 100-95 with 16 seconds left.

Charlotte had a chance to win at the end of regulation and the first overtime but failed to get a shot off each time. Bryce Drew knocked the ball away from Baron Davis on the left wing as time expired in the fourth period.

After Brand's jumper tied it, 84-84, with eight seconds left in the first extra session, Charlotte again set up for the winning shot. This time, Mercer blocked Wesley's 18-footer at the buzzer.

Mercer scored all six of Chicago's points in the second overtime as the Bulls opened a 90-86 lead with 3:15 to go. The Hornets pulled even on baskets by Davis and Campbell before the teams went scoreless over the final 82 seconds of the period.

Chicago had the last possession of the second overtime but Mercer's jumper from the right wing clanged off the back of the rim at the buzzer.

Overtime was the last thing on the minds of the Hornets for the first three quarters. Charlotte went scoreless for the first 4 1/2 minutes of the second period, allowing the Bulls to grab a 45-29 lead on Brand's two foul shots with 1:55 left in the quarter.

Charlotte was held to a season-low 33 points in the first half.

But Chicago missed 16 of 19 shots at one point in the second half, allowing Charlotte to close to 68-62 on Wesley's two foul shots with 5:10 left in regulation.

The Bulls appeared to steady themselves as Mercer hit two straight jumpers, making it 74-68 with 1:47 to go. But Charlotte scored the final six points in regulation, tying it, 74-74, on Davis' two foul shots with 28 seconds remaining.

Chicago went up, 80-76, on Artest's layup with 2:11 to play in the first overtime.
