Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- If there were any questions that the San Antonio Spurs and Orlando Magic are headed in opposite directions, they were answered by the play of the teams' respective starting centers.

David Robinson scored 26 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four assists while thoroughly outplaying Andrew DeClercq as San Antonio rolled to a 112-95 triumph over Orlando.

Robinson was coming off a 29-point, 22-rebound performance against Detroit on Saturday and his increased production has led San Antonio (22-11) to the top record in the Midwest Division.

"I don't know what has happened to Dave," teammate Tim Duncan said. "I need to take what he is taking. He has been running the floor incredibly. His pop is there and he's getting up and getting all kinds of rebounds. He is all over the floor."

"This year I am running well and just feel good physically," said Robinson. "This is as good as I have felt the past two years. This summer I did a lot of work stretching to get my body loose. I got a lot more bounce in me."

Duncan, who spurned the Magic as a free agent during the offseason, added 19 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots as the Spurs posted their fourth straight victory. He was greeted by a mixed reaction in his first visit to Orlando since the decision to re-sign with the Spurs.

"I wasn't sure what to expect," Duncan said. "I didn't know what to expect. It was kind of mixed out there, but it really didn't matter. To tell the truth, it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be."

DeClercq was held to two points in 12 minutes as Orlando suffered its fourth consecutive loss. The Magic shot just 37 percent (34-of-91) and were down 56-35 by halftime.

Tracy McGrady had 25 points and tied a season high with 12 rebounds. But he made just 9-of-27 shots from the field as Orlando's starting five shot just 20-of-62 (xx percent), including 2-of-9 from 3-point range.

San Antonio led 16-15 with two minutes left in the opening quarter, but Danny Ferry's basket ignited a 7-2 burst that gave the Spurs a six-point lead heading into the second period.

The Magic were within 23-19 following a pair of free throws by Monty Williams nine seconds into the quarter. But Ferry countered again, draining a 3-pointer from the right corner.

Duncan had a basket with just under 11 minutes left to push the lead to nine, but Troy Hudson's 3-pointer got Orlando back within six. Ferry had a basket to spark a 12-1 run that pushed the advantage to 42-25.

Robinson and Terry Porter had three points apiece during the spurt, which was capped by back-to-back baskets by Samaki Walker. The Magic did not get back within single digits the rest of the half and trailed by 21 after 24 minutes.

"I have to be pleased with the way we played," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "I thought we lost a little bit of focus once the Magic started double-teaming and trapping, but other than that, we really executed well at both ends of the court."

San Antonio took its largest lead, 67-41, on an 18-footer by Ira Newble's with 7:52 left in the third quarter. The Magic put together a run late in the period and were within 80-69 with 19 seconds to go.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Pat Garrity got Orlando within 93-84 with 5:59 left in the fourth quarter. But Porter had a 17-footer and a layup around a dunk by Duncan to push the lead back to 15.

"It was a tough game. We didn't play as well as we anticipated, didn't play as well as we needed to, and we didn't play as hard as we needed to from the beginning," Magic forward John Amaechi said.
