Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Antonio McDyess and Raef LaFrentz combined for 55 points and 24 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets defeated the Vancouver Grizzlies, 112-105, for their fifth straight win.

McDyess had 31 points and 13 rebounds and LaFrentz added 24 and 11 as the Nuggets reeled off their 10th victory in 12 games. They improved to 15-3 when scoring at least 100 points. McDyess scored 16 points in the first quarter before playing just four minutes in the second.

"(It's) a good feeling playing on the road and getting a good win." said McDyess, who is averaging 31 points during the winning streak. "I'm not even putting pressure on myself. I'm just going out and playing good ball."

Denver's bench outscored Vancouver's, 28-10, and the Nuggets held a 24-9 advantage on the offensive boards.

Tracy Murray provided a spark off the bench, scoring 11 of his 17 points in the third quarter, including nine during a five-minute stretch. Murray had not played since December 22 in a victory over Portland when he scored two points in four minutes.

"Tracy did a terrific job." Denver coach Dan Issel said. "He hasn't been given any playing time. We needed somebody to come off the bench with the absence of George McCloud and give us a boost. I thought Robert Pack with his energy and Tracy with his shooting were the two players that got us back into the game."

McCloud, Denver's captain and sixth man, was not with the team due to personal reasons.

The Grizzlies shot 56 percent (10-of-18) from 3-point range, but committed 16 turnovers that led to 18 points for the Nuggets.

Vancouver sliced a nine-point deficit to 103-101 on a 3-pointer by Shareef Abdur-Rahim with 2:15 remaining. But Nick Van Exel answered with a 26-footer from the left side with 1:48 to play.

"This was big." Van Exel said "I thought we never quit. We were able to get to the loose balls and loose rebounds. Because of our altitude, we are in better shape than other teams. We play in (the) mile high (city) and people don't understand how much energy we have. We can run and run."

Abdur-Rahim made two free throws 11 seconds later, but Voshon Lenard nailed another 3-pointer to make it 109-103. Damon Jones hit a 15-footer for the Grizzlies before McDyess hit 1-of-2 from the line and LaFrentz capped the scoring with a pair of free throws.

"(They) kept giving me the ball," Lenard said after going 2-of-13 from the field for the game. "After having a tough night, I still believe I can hit that. A big shot, that's all that was."

"We came together and have been playing great basketball over this stretch," LaFrentz said. "As a team, we played hard tonight and it's a big win for us."

Abdur-Rahim collected 26 points and 13 rebounds and Mike Bibby added 23 points and nine assists for Vancouver, which has lost 13 of its last 16 games.

After trailing by as many as 13 points, the Nuggets used a 22-3 run to take the lead. Murray's 3-pointer made it 45-43 with 5:15 left in the second quarter and Denver took a 53-51 lead into intermission.

"We have a winners attitude right now." Issel said.
