Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone would not let it happen.

With his team on the verge of its first-ever five-game losing streak at the Delta Center, Malone snapped out of a personal funk and scored 10 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter as the Utah Jazz held on for a 103-99 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Malone was coming off a dreadful 3-of-16 shooting performance in Saturday's 99-97 victory at Houston. That win ended a season-high five-game skid for the Jazz, who had not lost five in a row at home since the 1981-82 season, when they dropped 12 straight at the Salt Palace.

"I've been in the league for a long time and I've never seen a Utah team lose four in a row. And then we went and lost four in a row here and nobody could really say why," Jazz center Olden Polynice said. "We just knew we didn't want it to go to five in a row."

But "The Mailman" was on Tuesday night, hitting 10-of-20 shots and 15-of-21 free throws while grabbing 10 rebounds in 43 minutes. Donyell Marshall scored 23 points and John Stockton added 15 and eight assists for the Jazz, who lost four in a row here during the 1992-93 campaign. The Delta Center opened before the 1991-92 season.

"I think the win itself is important to us to try and get off on a good start. We just happened to be at home," Malone said. "We got a lot of games at home. No matter what would have happened, we went through stretches like that before, probably not losing that many at home in a long time. But you go out and you play and you fight.

"You show a little life and good things happen," he added. "But like I say, it was a good win for us."

Reggie Miller scored 30 points for the Pacers, who were trying for their first three-game winning streak since November 4-15.

Jalen Rose had 21 points and 12 assists and Jermaine O'Neal added 20 points and 10 rebounds for Indiana, which slipped to 3-2 on a six-game road trip.

"Home team won," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said. "It was a load tonight, with the way we played and the way they played."

John Starks scored 12 points for Utah, which shot 43 percent (36-of-84) and held a 50-39 rebounding advantage. The Jazz yielded just nine points off 10 turnovers.

"It's important to get that home losing streak out of the way," Starks said. "You don't want to give games away at home and I think in the last four or five ballgames, we've been giving games away and you can't do that and expect to have a good record in this league."

Indiana shot 49 percent (38-of-77), including 8-of-17 from 3-point range.

The game featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes, the last of which came when Jacque Vaughn sandwiched a layup and a 22-footer around a basket by Starks to give the Jazz a 74-70 lead with 6.9 seconds left in the third quarter.

A decisive 10-0 run ended early in the fourth period when Marshall and Malone made consecutive baskets to stretch the margin to 78-70 with 11:02 to play.

Malone sat down for a few minutes but returned with 6:32 to play and the Jazz clinging to a 78-75 lead. He made a layup on his first touch, fed Stockton for a 20-footer and hit two free throws as Utah extended the advantage to 88-81 with 3:24 remaining.

"It was a good win," Stockton said. "We haven't had a lot of success here at home lately and we needed to get over that hump as well. So hopefully this is something we can build from."

Malone made four more free throws down the stretch as the Jazz completed a season sweep of the Pacers.
