Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Lamar Odom had 15 points and 13 rebounds and Cherokee Parks scored a season-high 15 points off the bench, leading the Los Angeles Clippers to a 92-86 victory over the Denver Nuggets, who had a five-game winning streak stopped.

Odom, an athletic forward with good ballhandling skills, hit 6-of-14 shots and handed out six assists as the Clippers won for just the second time in the last 10 meetings with the Nuggets.

Parks connected on 7-of-9 shots and Eric Piatkowski also provided a spark off the bench, scoring 14 points in 23 minutes. Rookie Quentin Richardson had 14 points and Michael Olowokandi 12 and 10 rebounds to help the Clippers to their third win in nine games.

"I'm always ready to step up and tonight I got the minutes and the chance to prove myself," Parks said. "I just have to stay aggressive offensively and keep shooting the ball. Even if I miss, it forces the defense to react and it gives our guys a chance to rebound."

Denver, which had won 10 of its previous 12 games, could not recover from a 14-point halftime deficit. Antonio McDyess, who had 29 points and 13 rebounds, made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:07 remaining to pull the Nuggets within 90-83.

After a turnover by Odom, Nick Van Exel nailed a 35-footer from the right wing to cut the deficit to 90-86 with 43 seconds to go. Denver elected not to foul and the Clippers ran the clock down to 21 seconds before McDyess rejected a shot by Earl Boykins.

"We didn't get a complete team effort down the stretch," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "Nick played terrific, but nobody else showed up and that was the difference."

Odom atoned for his turnover by blocking Raef LaFrentz's jumper in the lane and got the ball to Boykins, who sank two free throws with 11 seconds left for the final margin.

"They made a run. We were still up four points with 20 seconds left," Odom said. "McDyess was big for them tonight. He really kept them in the game. I made a bad play. It could have cost us, but I hustled back and got the block on LaFrentz."

Van Exel scored 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting and LaFrentz contributed 11. The 6-11 LaFrentz blocked three shots but was just 3-of-13 from the floor.

"We didn't bring enough energy to the floor tonight," Van Exel said. "We just couldn't get over the hump. Whenever we made a run, somebody stepped up and stopped it."

Richardson scored eight points to fuel a 16-2 run that closed the second period and left the Clippers with their biggest lead, 52-38, after a dunk by Parks with 1.2 seconds left.

Denver scored the first seven points of the third to draw within 52-45 on McDyess' dunk with 9:27 remaining. The Nuggets cut it to 62-58 when Voshon Lenard dunked on a fast break with 3:39 left in the third. Los Angeles answered with a 7-0 burst, taking a 69-58 lead into the break after Odom's dunk with 11.4 seconds left.
