Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks are playing like a first-place team.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half and Michael Finley added 26 as the Mavericks posted their seventh straight road victory, a 106-86 rout of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Christian Laettner had 14 points against his former team as the Mavericks matched a season high with their fourth consecutive win. Dallas (24-13) moved back into a virtual first-place tie with San Antonio (22-11) atop the Midwest Division.

"I'm real proud of the guys," Mavericks' interim coach Donn Nelson said. "We made a point of coming in and keeping our positive effort going and we wanted to create that with rebounding and defense."

"I guess it has taken the road wins and the road struggles to find ourselves," Finley said. "I have high expectations for this team all the time. I knew that our time would come. It was just a matter of weathering the storm, and now it's here."

Kevin Garnett led Minnesota with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Terrell Brandon added 12 points and LaPhonso Ellis 10 for the Timberwolves, who shot a season-low 37 percent (34-of-92) from the field.

Minnesota, which never led in the contest, has lost eight of its last 13 games.

"We laid an egg tonight and they didn't," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We were never in the ballgame. They totally dominated us. We were just never in the game, from beginning to end. There isn't mush more to say than that."

"Their front five is as good as any in the league, and they have depth off the bench," Ellis said. "They can come at you in different ways."

Dallas came out quickly and led 21-11 with five minutes left in the opening quarter. Finley had 12 points in the quarter as Dallas made 12-of-22 shots.

Minnesota shot just 30 percent (8-of-26) and trailed 30-20 heading into the second quarter.

Finley opened the second quarter with consecutive baskets to push the lead to 14. Dallas' advantage grew to 17 with just under four minutes left and the Mavericks held a 58-43 edge through 24 minutes.

Finley had 18, Howard Eisley 11 and Laettner 10 in the opening half.

"I feel very good about this win tonight, for reasons that you can figure out," Laettner said. "But more than that it is just a big win for us. We have big aspirations for this year and we just want to keep improving."

The Timberwolves made one last run in the third quarter. An eight-foot turnaround jumper by Garnett with 8:25 left in the period got Minnesota within 60-53. But Steve Nash drained a 25-footer to push the lead back to double digits and ignite an 18-4 burst.

The Timberwolves never got closer than 14 in the final quarter and trailed by as many as 27.

"They've got a bunch of great shooters on their team and they are very unselfish," Brandon said. "I don't think I have ever seen a team hit that many off-balance shots."

Minnesota made just 1-of-11 3-point attempts in the contest.

Steve Nash finished with 11 assists.
