Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards got to watch someone else suffer a late-game collapse for a change -- but still lost.

The floundering Wizards used a frantic 9-0 run to pull within one point in the final minute, but Gary Payton hit a pair of free throws and the Seattle SuperSonics escaped the MCI Center with a 104-101 win.

Trailing for the better part of 3 1/2 quarters, Washington remained within striking distance, thanks to the sharpshooting of Chris Whitney, who hit a career-best six 3-pointers and scored 22 points.

Vin Baker's basket with 4:45 gave Seattle a 102-92 lead and sealed Washington's fifth straight loss. But the Wizards did not go quietly.

Whitney drilled a 26-footer before Juwan Howard dunked, hit a four-footer and connected again from 13 feet to pull Washington within 102-101 with 45 seconds remaining.

"We always felt that we were never out of the game," Whitney said. "The team as a whole came back and played well."

Clearly frazzled by the Wizards' burst and the sudden rise in emotion from the crowd of 11,591, the Sonics looked disoriented on the other end. Shammond Williams missed an ill-advised jumper and Michael Smith grabbed the rebound for Washington with 29 seconds left.

Wizards coach Leonard Hamilton called for a timeout, but his team was unable to take the lead as Howard, Tyrone Nesby and Richard Hamilton missed makeable shots on the ensuing possession before Payton was fouled in a wild scramble for the ball.

"The ball bouncing around on the floor could have been anybody's," Leonard Hamilton lamented. "We had good looks at the basket, the shots and the tip-ins. We just came up on the short end. We're not going to get frustrated and we are really coming together as a unit."

The All-Star point guard calmly made both free throws with 5.2 seconds to play and Hamilton misfired on a potential tying 27-footer before the buzzer sounded.

"We didn't execute, we took bad shots, but we did what we had to do to win," Payton said after the Sonics moved back over .500 at 19-18. "We weren't frustrated. If we were frustrated we'd have lost the game."

Payton scored 20 points and Ruben Patterson added 19, including 11 in the first quarter, to help Seattle take the lead for good.

Howard netted 21 points and Nesby added 19 for Washington, which has dropped five in a row since its first two-game win streak of the season.

Baker scored 16 points off the bench and Williams and Brent Barry added 11 apiece for the Sonics, who shot 48 percent (39-of-82) and scored 27 points off Washington turnovers.

"The Washington team played hard," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We came in knowing it would be a fight because this is a scrappy team. There are no easy wins in this league."

Smith had 14 points and 10 boards for the Wizards, who shot 45 percent (39-of-87) and held a 44-37 rebounding advantage.

"I wish we would have won but it doesn't count if we don't win," Smith said. "We have to play hard for 48 minutes, there is nothing else you can say about it. We start off good, then we fall."

Patterson converted a three-point play, hit a 19-footer, knocked down two free throws, fed Rashard Lewis for an easy basket and scored himself on the ensuing possession as Seattle went ahead to stay, 15-11, with 5:50 left in the first quarter.

Seattle opened up leads of 15 points twice in the second period but the Wizards pulled within 59-51 at the half before Whitney kept them close with five 3-pointers after intermission.

The Sonics have won seven of the last nine meetings from Washington, including a 108-87 romp at Seattle on December 22.
