Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Dikembe Mutombo is known mostly for his rebounding and defense. But on Thursday, he provided some rare offense.

Mutumbo, who is averaging less than eight points per game, scored a season-high 20 and grabbed 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season, leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 107-96 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

"We came in with a great strategy from the beginning of the game," said Mutumbo, who scored in double figures for the first time in eight games. "Coach (Lon Kruger) said we had to pound them inside and take advantage. When you get the ball inside, you have to go to the basket."

Roshown McLeod added 18 and Jason Terry 17 for Atlanta, which matched a season high in points established December 12 against the Sacramento Kings.

Although still nine games under .500, the Hawks (13-22) have played better recently, going 7-4 in their last 11 contests.

"Another good team effort," Kruger said. "I think we continue to make progress. We just need to continue to move in a good direction."

After building a 58-47 halftime lead, the Hawks withstood a torrid third period by Golden State's Bob Sura, who scored 16 of his 18 points in the quarter.

"He was a handful," McLeod said. "We kept our composure. We had a game plan and we just wanted to follow the game plan of going inside to our big guys the whole game."

The Warriors sliced the deficit to 88-81 at the end of the period and pulled within 92-89 early in the fourth. But Atlanta never relinquished the lead despite scoring only 15 points over the final 12 minutes.

Rookie Marc Jackson scored 22 points and Antawn Jamison contributed 21 for Golden State. Atlanta dominated inside, outscoring the Warriors in the paint, 44-24.

"We just didn't fight like we should," Jackson said. "We need to fight more in the post. They just had it like candy today in the post."

Lorenzen Wright also had 17 points for the Hawks, who had five players in double figures.

"The more the merrier," Terry said. "If Dikembe ever scores 20, we're going to win every game. I told him before, 'If you can handle it like that inside, it will free up a lot on the outside.' We didn't have to work as hard."

Atlanta shot 52 percent (42-of-81) from the field and made 21 of its 22 foul shots.

"The focus has to be on getting these younger guys to understand what it takes -- not only in games, but in practice," Golden State forward Chris Mullin said.

"All we can do is play better defense," Golden State coach Dave Cowens added. "We help all the time. We still get beat on the block. I know we're small and I know we're young. Still, you just have to be better consistently."

Golden State also was nearly perfect from the line (17-of-18) but shot just 43 percent (37-of-86). The Warriors also committed 19 turnovers that the Hawks converted into 24 points.

Jackson's jumper pulled Golden State with 92-89 with 9:11 to play, but Atlanta scored eight straight points to open a 100-89 cushion on Alan Henderson's six-footer with 6:22 left.

Golden State closed to 100-93 on Vonteego Cummings' tip-in with 4:42 to go but Atlanta answered on Wright's three-point play 12 seconds later. The Warriors managed just three points over the 4 1/2 minutes.

Atlanta never trailed in the game, opening early leads of 8-0 and 15-5. Jamison tied the contest for the final time, 21-21, on a jumper with 2:31 left in the first period. The Hawks led by as many as 14 in the second period.

Andy Panko, who was signed by the Hawks out of the International Basketball Association last week, made his NBA debut but did not score in one minute.
