Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- One of the streaks had to end and the Portland Trail Blazers stepped up down the stretch to make sure theirs continued.

Steve Smith and Damon Stoudamire scored 16 points apiece and Rasheed Wallace added 14 as the Trail Blazers matched the longest winning streak in the NBA this season with their 10th straight triumph, an 83-70 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

The win streak matches the mark of the Philadelphia 76ers, who opened the season 10-0. Portland, which has the best record in the Western Conference at 27-10, has feasted on the other conference this season, going 17-3 against teams from the East.

"We've been getting a great team effort the last couple of weeks." Trail Blazers guard Bonzi Wells said. "Tonight's game was real up and down but fortunately we could get the stops and baskets we needed in the fourth quarter."

Elden Campbell had 23 points and 10 rebounds for Charlotte, which was denied its 13th straight home victory. Baron Davis added 10 points and 11 assists for the Hornets.

"We just missed shots," Davis said. "They made shots down the stretch. We have to continue to play hard. They had some big shots back to back. ... They have a lot of size. ... We just didn't capitalize on opportunities and they found their second wind."

Charlotte held a 66-65 lead with 7:17 left but Greg Anthony buried a 21-footer to ignite a 9-0 run that decided the game. Smith followed Anthony's jumper with a 3-pointer from the left wing.

Anthony's 3-pointer with 4:37 to go pushed Portland's lead to 73-66 before Arvydas Sabonis capped the spurt with a free throw 43 seconds later.

Campbell had a 12-footer with 3:35 to go to get Charlotte within 74-68 but Sabonis had another free throw before four straight points by Smith pushed the lead to 11.

Wallace had eight of his points in the opening quarter as Portland led 32-18 after 12 minutes. The Trail Blazers made 58 percent (14-of-24) of their shots in the quarter while Charlotte was just 8-of-25.

"We got off to a great start by getting out in the open floor and playing good defense," Trail Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said.

"Our defense early helped us get the lead and then we stepped up again defensively in the fourth quarter," Stoudamire said.

Charlotte got within 43-42 at the half and used a 6-0 run midway through the third quarter to open a 58-49 lead. Eddie Robinson had four of the six points in the spurt.

But after Robinson's basket with 3:48 left in the quarter put Charlotte up by nine, Smith sank a 21-pointer and Stoudamire scored seven straight points to knot the contest.

"In the third quarter we went up by eight and they fought back," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "That was the ballgame. They are a great team."
