Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady scored 36 points and the Orlando Magic took advantage of another woeful shooting performance by the New Jersey Nets en route to a 101-87 victory.

Ranked last in the league in shooting percentage, the Nets were respectable in the first half, when they shot 48 percent (20-of-42) and opened a 57-50 advantage.

But the Nets could not find the basket in the second half, shooting just 22 percent (7-of-22) in losing for the 11th time in their last 13 games. New Jersey shot 36.5 percent (27-of-74) overall.

New Jersey coach Byron Scott was hard on his club afterwards.

"When they ran the trap, we were stagnant and careless," he said. "Watching this made me doubt if we have guys who have enough heart."

Keith Van Horn, playing for the fourth time since returning from a broken leg, was the main culprit, missing 11-of-12 shots.

"I think that we were never really able to get into a good rhythm offensively and I think that affected me a lot," Van Horn said. "We did not do a good job of being aggressive against their 1-2-2 press and that led us to taking shots at the end of the shot."

One of the Magic's prized free agent signings in the offseason, McGrady continued to pay dividends and surpassed the 30-point mark for the 11th time this season. He is averaging 31.7 points in his last four games.

Darrell Armstrong added 18 of his 20 points in the second half for the Magic, who stopped a four-game losing streak.

A pair of free throws by Lucious Harris gave the Nets their biggest lead, 65-55, with 9:19 remaining in the third quarter.

But behind their feisty point guard, the Magic rallied and used an 18-2 surge to take the lead for good.

Armstrong scored 11 points in the burst that he capped with a 3-pointer that provided Orlando a 73-67 lead with 4:11 left in the quarter. He had 15 points in the period as the Magic took a 77-70 lead entering the fourth quarter.

"It was a great job by our team. I'd like to say it was me but it wasn't me, it was a team effort," Armstrong said.

New Jersey point guard Stephon Marbury was at his best in the first half, when he scored 17 of his 20 points. But he scored just three points in the second half, missing all three of his shots.

"We were down and we went to the trap in the second half and it was really a nice defense for us," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "The trap wasn't to force turnovers, the trap was to take the ball out of stephon Marbury's hands, who we really had no answer for in the first half. And we also wanted to slow their offense down."

"We had to find a way to stop Stephon because he is the one who initiates the offense, so once we got the ball out of his hands nobody else really knew what to do with the ball," McGrady said. "We did a lot of trapping which made them turn the ball over."

The Nets did get back into in the fourth quarter, pulling within 85-84 with 5:33 left on a follow shot by Johnny Newman.

McGrady, however, would not let the Magic give up the lead. Orlando's go-to player scored seven points in a 10-1 burst that gave the Magic a 95-85 lead with 2:39 to play.

McGrady finished 14-of-27 from the field for the Magic, who shot 50 percent (38-of-76).
