Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- David Wesley's 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds to play gave the Charlotte Hornets an 86-85 victory over the Bulls, whose latest losing streak hit three games.

Wesley, who had one point entering the final period, found himself open after losing his man on a switch and Baron Davis swung him the ball. He knocked down a 26-footer from the left shoulder to put Charlotte in front.

"I just got two shots to go in late tonight," Wesley said. "I got good shots at it and took them. You always think that the next one will go in. The play went exactly as coach called it. He told us to run the dribble, hand off to me, shoot the three and let's go home."

After a failed inbounds attempt and a timeout, Chicago designed a play for Elton Brand. But Brand's 15-foot jumper bounced off the back of the rim as time expired as the Bulls lost to the Hornets for the second time in four nights. Charlotte outlasted Chicago at home in three overtimes, 102-95, on Tuesday.

Baron Davis scored 21 points to lead the Hornets and Wesley finished with 11. Charlotte has won the last eight games in the series.

After Elden Campbell made 1-of-2 free throws for the Hornets, the Bulls responded with a 8-1 run and took a 56-49 lead on a short hook shot by Michael Ruffin with just under six minutes left in the third quarter. They carried a 67-58 advantage into the final period.

Exactly a year teammate Bobby Phills was killed in a car crash in which he was a passenger, Wesley had a tough time making shots. He was 3-of-8 from the field for and did not make his first field goal until there was 5:45 to play.

"It's the anniversary," Brand said. "I'm sure they wanted to get a win. It's a sad thing. I'm sure they tried to step their game up."

After his free throws cut the margin to three points with 2:12 to go, Lee Nailon's layup and a pair of foul shots by Davis tied it at 83-83 with 1:21 remaining.

But Ron Artest flew down the lane uncontested for a thunderous dunk that put the Bulls ahead and Brand blocked Campbell's jumper with 40.9 seconds to go.

On Tuesday, Wesley scored 21 of his 28 points after halftime as the Hornets rallied from a 19-point deficit late in the third quarter and won the first triple-overtime game in team history.

"We've played some real comeback ball lately," he said. "We were down big against them and also Portland the other night. We came back then and we knew we could do it again tonight."

Ron Mercer netted 21 points and Brand and Brad Miller added 16 apiece for the Bulls, who fell to 4-14 at home.

Chicago led by 10 points with 4 1/2 minutes to play. But Charlotte closed with a 15-4 run, capped by Wesley's bucket, to take the lead for the first time since midway through the third quarter.

"It's very tough," Brand said, who was 0-for-7 from the field in the second half. "Up 10 points with three minutes to go, we just couldn't hold them off."

"It was a disappointed locker room," added Chicago coach Tim Floyd. "We did not handle the pressure well. I told them if they quit because of frustration, then they really have nothing. We need a consistent effort and with improved execution, we will be better down the stretch."
