Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Nick Van Exel scored 13 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter as the shorthanded Denver Nuggets got back on the winning track with a 106-93 victory over the Sacramento Kings.

Denver played with just nine players after a six-player trade with the Toronto Raptors earlier Friday. The Nuggets acquired Kevin Willis, Aleksandar Radojevic, Garth Joseph and a second-round draft pick for Keon Clark, Tracy Murray and rookie Mamadou N'diaye.

"Early on, we were not playing with the same enthusiasm and spirit we had been in recent games," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "It's tough when you break a family up. But I thought the important thing was that the game was there for the taking and we went out and got it."

Voshon Lenard added 22 points, including seven in a key third-quarter stretch as the Nuggets bounced back after their five-game winning streak was snapped on Wednesday in a 92-86 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. Antonio McDyess added 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Doug Christie's 3-pointer with 4:08 left in the third quarter pulled the Kings into a 68-68 tie. Lenard responded with a 3-pointer as the Nuggets closed the period with a 10-3 run to take a 78-71 lead into the fourth quarter. The scoring was capped by Lenard's 3-pointer with three seconds to play.

The Kings ran off eight straight points and closed within 84-81 with just under eight minutes remaining as Brent Barry and Scot Pollard each scored three. But Pollard's flagrant foul led to four straight points by McDyess and Sacramento never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

James Posey scored 13 points and pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds while limiting Peja Stojakovic to 10 points. Raef LaFrentz scored 14 points while Mark Strickland added 10 off the bench for Denver, which shot 44 percent (44-of-100).

"I told Posey before the game that the guy he was guarding was a great shooter and that he would have to make him work on defense and keep in constant motion," Issel said. "I think he took that to the extreme tonight."

Chris Webber scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Kings, who were playing their first road game in three weeks. Christie added 14 points while Jason Williams had 11, eight assists and seven rebounds.

"Swagger is Nick Van Exel and Antonio McDyess, that's the way they play no matter their record," Webber said. "We lost to that swagger. You saw Nick turn it on. He's been a Kings killer for a long time."

The Kings made just 5-of-22 3-pointers and shot 41 percent (37-of-90) in addition to being outrebounded, 58-45.

"I don't think we played well at all," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "We never made them defend us. We took quick shots and too many long shots. There was no way we were going to win this game."

Sacramento's previous nine games were decided by five points or less. The Kings still have won 10 of the last 14 meetings.
