Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- It was a fitting end to a frustrating night for the Houston Rockets.

Maurice Taylor's turnover with 1.7 seconds left -- the 19th by the Rockets -- capped an evening of missed opportunities and sealed the Sacramento Kings' 84-81 triumph.

Chris Webber scored 31 points, including a clutch dunk in the final 17 seconds, as Sacramento won for the 10th time in 14 games. Peja Stojakovic and Vlade Divac added 18 points apiece for the Kings.

Steve Francis led Houston with 23 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and a career-high four blocks.

The Kings led 79-78 following a free throw by Webber with 61 seconds to go but Taylor put Houston on top with a six-foot jumper 18 seconds later. Webber had a dunk off a feed from Doug Christie with 30 seconds left and was fouled by Kenny Thomas.

But Webber missed the free throw and Divac tapped the rebound back to Webber. Again Christie found Webber alone under the basket and the ensuing dunk put Sacramento ahead 83-80 with 16 seconds to go. Francis made 1-of-2 from the line with 11 seconds and Christie was fouled.

Christie made 1-of-2, setting the stage for Taylor's lost opportunity.

"The play was designed for Cuttino (Mobley), but I guess Mo didn't feel comfortable making the pass and time just ran out," Francis said.

"Doug made two big plays," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "And that was the whole game right there. We were fortunate to get out of here with a win."

Webber was just 8-of-27 from the field but 15-of-18 from the line. He had five assists but five turnovers for the Kings, who have split the first two games of their three-game road trip.

The Rockets bench was held scoreless, going 0-for-2 from the field and grabbing just five rebounds. Sacramento got just seven points from its reserves.

The Kings raced to a 14-8 advantage and led 31-23 after 12 minutes. Divac had 11 points and Webber and Stojakovic had eight apiece during the period.

Sacramento extended its lead to 13 by opening the second quarter on an 11-6 burst. Stojakovic had 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting in the half but the rest of the Kings were just 14-of-36 from the field.

Sacramento's lead was 15 early in the second half but Houston fought back and was within 69-61 by the end of three quarters. Thomas, Francis and Mobley had 13 apiece through 36 minutes but Francis really put on a show in the fourth period, scoring 10 points.

"I was very impressed by the way he came off the pick-and-roll, and then he just exploded to the basket," Christie said. "I talked to Webber at the timeout and told him we needed to get the ball out of Steve's hand because he's just so dangerous."

Mobley had 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

"I love his game and Mobley's too," Divac said. "They both give us a whole lot of trouble. They are the best two guards in the league in taking the ball to the basket."
