Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- On a night they retired Dominique Wilkins' uniform number, the Atlanta Hawks got a season-high 28 points from Lorenzen Wright en route to a 108-88 thrashing of the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Hawks never trailed after late in the first quarter and led by as many as 20 points in the final period. Activated from the injured list before the game, Chris Crawford made a bucket with 29 seconds left to put Atlanta up, 106-86.

The Clippers cut the deficit to eight points twice midway through the fourth quarter. Earl Boykins' basket with 7:35 to go got them within 88-80, but Travis Knight and Jason Terry sandwiched hoops around Jeff McInnis' free throw before Knight started a 6-0 run to push the lead back to 98-81 with 4:04 to play.

Acquired from Los Angeles earlier this season, Wright scored 18 points in the second half. He had 10 points and made 5-of-7 shots from the field in the third quarter, helping the Hawks carry a 77-67 lead into the final period.

Asked what motivated him, Wright replied, "The Clippers."

"Every time I play these guys, I go out and play hard and just help my team win," he said. "I wanted to get them. We were gonna come out and play hard against these guys. All my shots were falling tonight, I just shot them and concentrated.

Atlanta improved to 3-1 on a five-game homestand that concludes on Monday against New Jersey. The Hawks played before the first sellout of the season at Philips Arena as fans watched Wilkins' No. 21 raised to the rafters.

"Its a great feeling," said Wilkins, who led the NBA in scoring in 1985-86. "It's a great honor that a lot of guys will not get to experience. It was just a wonderful feeling."

"I grew up watching Dominique," Wright said. "(He) motivates me to play hard. We knew it was sold out and we just wanted to show the Atlanta fans what they've been missing."

Terry finished with 18 points for Atlanta, which has won eight of 12 following a 6-18 start.

McInnis and rookie Darius Miles scored 12 points apiece to lead five players in double figures for the Clippers, who have lost three of four since Sunday's emotional victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Clippers surrendered 34 points on 22 turnovers.

"We were awful," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "They beat us in every phase of the game. They played with more intensity. We were just bad, that's the only way I can put it. They deserved to win the game because they played like they wanted to win. They got every offensive rebound they wanted in the first half. We just didn't play."

Clippers forward Corey Maggette, who weighs 218 pounds, was hospitalized for tests after colliding with Atlanta center Dikembe Mutombo, who weighs 261 pounds. He suffered ear trauma and left midway through the third quarter after missing the only shot he took in six minutes.
