Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Emerging superstar Dirk Nowitzki is a good shooter, but he's also too good of a passer to miss the open man twice in a row.

Seconds after making a costly turnover, Nowitzki found Howard Eisley wide open for a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Dallas Mavericks a 91-90 victory over the slumping Charlotte Hornets.

Dallas, which faced an 11-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter, was in position to take the lead in the closing seconds. Nowitzki, under pressure at the right wing, tried to send a cross-court pass to Michael Finley. But his pass was too strong and the ball went out of bounds.

The Hornets inbounded to Jamal Mashburn, who immediately was fouled by Nowitzki. Mashburn missed the first attempt before hitting the second to give Charlotte a 90-88 edge with seven seconds to go.

After a timeout, Nowitzki took the inbounds pass and gave the ball to Finley at the top of the arc. Finley gave it back to Nowitzki, who lost control of his dribble as he tried to set his feet for a 3-pointer from the left wing. But the 7-footer spotted a wide-open Eisley on the left sideline for the winning basket.

"This is a big win for us tonight," Eisley said. "After losing three in a row and playing on the road against a tough team like Charlotte, (it) certainly means a lot to us. We knew we had time on that last play. It was created for Mike (Finley), but we just made the extra pass and hit the open shot. Our game picked up at both ends of the floor and we really picked up our play in the fourth when we needed to."

"It was difficult. You win some games like this and you lose some games like this," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We beat Chicago on a last-second shot last week. They made plays down the stretch and we didn't. They ran the pick-and-roll extremely well and Eisley got in the lane. That hurt us."

Nowitzki had 27 points and Eisley added 23 and eight assists for Dallas, which improved to 15-8 on the road despite playing without point guard Steve Nash, who sat out with a sore left hamstring.

"I'm still stunned and my heart is still out there on mid-court," said Dallas interim coach Donn Nelson. "Howard, in the wake of Steve Nash being out and all the pressure of not winning lately, put forth a tremendous effort in running the club tonight and hitting the game-winner."

Finley scored 14 points but shot just 6-of-18. Shawn Bradley and Loy Vaught each scored eight points off the bench as Dallas ended a season-high three-game losing streak. Vaught had five of his 10 rebounds in the fourth quarter.

Mashburn scored 15 of his 22 points in the first quarter and David Wesley added 19 points for Charlotte, which has lost eight of its last 11 games. The Hornets have dropped two in a row at Charlotte Coliseum after a 12-game home winning streak.

Masburn also had nine rebounds and nine assists but made just 3-of-9 shots after the first quarter. P.J. Brown had 14 points and eight rebounds and Elden Campbell added 13 and six to help Charlotte to a huge 50-29 advantage on the boards. But the Hornets made 19 turnovers, leading to 20 points for Dallas.

"It hurts," Mashburn said. "We outrebounded them and got more assists, but we turned the ball over more than they did. The game came down to one or two shots. We had a lot of opportunities to put this away and we didn't. We're professionals. We have to bounce back and put it all together."

Mashburn made 7-of-9 shots in the first quarter and capped a 17-5 run with a 16-footer to give the Hornets a 27-15 lead with 55 seconds left.

Charlotte took a 48-38 lead into the break. Baron Davis, who had 11 points and seven rebounds, made a layup to give the Hornets their biggest lead, 59-43, with 8:39 left in the third quarter.

Dallas reeled off 10 straight points and trimmed the margin to 78-75 when Nowitzki hit a 17-footer with 6:17 to go.
