Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Anthony Peeler gave the Minnesota Timberwolves exactly what they needed.

Peeler made a pair of clutch jumpers in the final 71 seconds as the Timberwolves held on for an 89-81 victory over the Utah Jazz, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Minnesota began the fourth quarter with a 65-60 lead but allowed Utah back in it by missing 14 of its first 17 shots in the period. Peeler was scoreless with one miss during that stretch.

A basket by Karl Malone gave the Jazz their only lead of the quarter at 75-74 with 3:54 remaining. A jumper by John Stockton pulled Utah into a 78-78 tie with 2:01 left before Minnesota finally regained control.

Terrell Brandon's jumper from the right side with 1:41 to play gave the Timberwolves the lead for good. After Stockton missed, Peeler buried a 3-pointer from the right corner for an 83-78 edge with 1:08 left.

"We just feed off KG (Kevin Garnett) and whenever they go double him we just wait on the outside and and try to play off him," Peeler said. "When we're patient and we play off of him and they go to trap him, it just makes our job that much easier."

"Anthony hit that three and the momentum just swung our way," Brandon said.

John Starks made 1-of-2 free throws and Peeler drilled another jumper from the right baseline for an 85-79 lead with 49 seconds left. Utah's season-high 25th turnover on the next possession sealed the win for Minnesota.

"I think we didn't want to take care of the ball tonight," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "You can't win when you're turning the ball over that many times."

"I think the big thing we did was play defense," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "When you can play a Utah team and force them into 25 turnovers and get 33 points out of their turnovers and have 12 steals, then you know we did a nice job defensively."

Peeler scored 17 points. Kevin Garnett had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Brandon added 19 points and 11 assists for the Wolves, who won for just the fourth time in 26 visits to Utah.

"They made a little run at us, but our guys stayed aggressive in the fourth quarter," Saunders said.

"We just try to stay calm and aggressive at the same time," Peeler said. "It's hard to do, but tonight it worked out for us."

Malone had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Donyell Marshall added 19 and 10 for the Jazz, who fell to 3-1 on their season-high eight-game homestand.

Garnett scored 13 points and Malone 12 in the first half, which ended in a 42-42 tie. Utah had 15 turnovers leading to 17 points for Minnesota.

"Maybe the turnovers killed the momentum sometimes," said Jazz center Greg Ostertag, who started for the suspended Olden Polynice. Polynice served a one-game ban for his guilty plea to charges of impersonating a police officer.

A fast-break dunk by Marshall capped an 8-2 surge and gave the Jazz a 50-44 lead with 9:12 left in the third period. Utah still held a 58-56 edge after Jacque Vaughn's 3-pointer with 2:32 to go before the Wolves closed the quarter with a 9-2 run that featured a 3-pointer from Peeler.

Wally Szczerbiak scored 12 points for Minnesota, which shot 45 percent (36-of-80) and committed just 13 turnovers.

Stockton had 10 points and 10 assists for the Jazz, who shot just under 45 percent (33-of-74) and held a 44-33 rebounding edge.
