Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Keith Van Horn scored 23 of his season-high 27 points in the first half to lead the New Jersey Nets to a 108-89 victory over the lowly Washington Wizards.

In just his seventh game back from injury, Van Horn shot 9-of-17, pulled down 12 rebounds and dished out five assists.

"Keith's legs are starting to look better," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "His shot is looking better and everybody else is falling into place."

Washington never led after the first quarter and trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half en route to its eighth straight loss. The Wizards (7-33) fell to 1-12 against Atlantic Division foes.

After the Wizards cut the deficit to 86-77 at the end of the third quarter, Nets rookie Stephen Jackson followed the opening bucket by the Wizards with back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 10-0 run.

"Stephen did a great job. He hit two big threes and put us back up by 13 and we just took it from there," Scott said.

Johnny Newman hit a running layup and, after a Washington miss, Sherman Douglas finished a fast break with a layup to put New Jersey ahead, 96-79, with 7:04 to play.

"I've trusted those guys all season long, especially Sherm," Scott said.

Washington scored just two points in the first 5:40 of the period.

Stephon Marbury had 22 points but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. Newman added 16 and Jackson finished with 15 for Nets, who have won back-to-back games for just the third time this season.

Richard Hamilton scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half and Juwan Howard also netted 18 for the Wizards, who played without injured starting guards Rod Strickland and Mitch Richmond.

New Jersey built its biggest lead at 71-52 on Jackson's jump shot with 8:26 remaining in the third quarter. Washington used a 7-0 run to get within 77-66 with 3:55 left.

The Nets led 28-25 after one quarter behind 11 points from Van Horn and eight from Newman. New Jersey shot just 30 percent (6-of-20) from the floor in the opening quarter but were 13-of-13 from the line.

New Jersey closed the second quarter with a 21-8 run to take a 63-48 lead at halftime. Van Horn scored 10 points, Marbury six and Vladimir Stepania five during that stretch.
