Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd avenged his worst performance of the season, scoring 15 points and shutting down Gary Payton to lead the Phoenix Suns to an 89-80 victory over the Seattle Supersonics.

Kidd scored just three points on 1-of-7 shooting in a 106-87 loss to Seattle at America West Arena on Sunday. In this game, Kidd made 5-of-10 shots and added seven assists and four rebounds.

"We wanted to make it as tough as possible tonight," Kidd said. "We came out flat on Sunday. Tonight we came out with energy. If we can do this every night we could be one of the elite teams in this league."

However, Kidd's biggest contribution may have come on defense. He held Payton, a fellow native of Oakland, California and his good friend, to 15 points on 6-of-24 shooting and six assists.

"I don't mind seeing him struggle," Kidd said. "He tends to always bring his best game."

Mario Elie guarded Payton during a good potion of the game, in order to free Kidd offensively.

"I told coach, `Let me try to guard him so Jason can lead the break,'" Elie said. "I'm not as quick, but I've been playing long enough that i know how to position myself to play defense."

The Suns closed the third quarter with a 20-9 spurt to take a 66-62 lead entering the final period.

Phoenix picked up where it left off, opening the fourth quarter with a 13-4 run to take a 79-66 lead with 7:02 to go. Seattle hung around but could not get closer than six points down the stretch.

With the Suns holding an 86-80 lead, Kidd rebounded a missed layup by Ruben Patterson and hit a 3-pointer at the other end to seal it with 44 seconds left.

Rodney Rogers scored 17 points and Tony Delk added 16 off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc for Phoenix.

Shawn Marion scored just seven points but grabbed 16 rebounds. Rookie Jake Tskalidis chipped in 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting for the Suns, who have won six of their last nine on the road.

"(Tsakalidis') minutes kind of turned the game around," said Suns coach Scott Skiles. "He really did some nice things out there."

Patterson and Brent Barry scored 19 points apiece to lead Seattle.

The Sonics, who had scored 100 points in four straight games, turned in their worst shooting performance of the season at 34 percent (27-of-78).

"We did some of the things we needed to do defensively, but we just couldn't put the ball in the hole," Seattle forward Vin Baker said. "We've played so well offesnively, it's frustarting for us."

Barry completed a three-point play that brought the Sonics within 79-76 with 3:35 to play. Clifford Robinson sank 1-of-2 free throws and, after Payton misfired on a 3-pointer, Rogers was fouled on a dunk and made the free throw to extend the lead to 10 points.

Seattle went on a 17-4 run midway through the second quarter to take a 48-40 lead with 1:28 to go before halftime. Elie sank two free throws and, after Patterson misfired on a 17-footer, Rogers made two more from the line to get the Suns within 48-44 at the break.

The Sonics took their first lead, 37-36, on a pair of free throws by Barry. Phoenix reclaimed the lead on Robinson's layup, but Patterson responded with a layup of his own to put Seattle ahead for the rest of thr half.

Phoenix collected assists on each of its first eight shots and jumped out to a 19-13 lead.
