Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Marcus Camby was not needed by the New York Knicks.

Despite playing without their suspended starting center, the Knicks got 34 points from Allan Houston and defeated the Detroit Pistons, 97-91.

"I don't know how he does it but we needed it," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said of Houston. "We made some shots but we didn't play our best defense or rebound the ball particularly well. But we took care of the ball and made some shots. When you make shots, it makes everything look pretty good."

Camby served the first of his five-game suspension for swinging at San Antonio's Danny Ferry on Monday but it hardly mattered. New York used a big second quarter to establish a working lead and withstood Jerry Stackhouse's 37 points and 10 assists.

"I thought we played pretty well," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "Defensively we gave up only 18 points in the paint. They just hit jump shots. We have got to play hard and play well to win against a team like that."

Eric Montross had a follow dunk to pull Detroit within 30-28 with 9:34 left in the second quarter. The Knicks went on a 14-2 run led by 11 points by former Piston Houston to open a 44-30 lead midway through the quarter. New York led, 56-47, at halftime.

"I knew I had to be aggressive," Houston said. "When I'm aggressive, I am usually shooting well. I am just consistently getting good shots. I am not worrying if they go in or not. But tonight fortunately, they did."

Stackhouse got the Pistons within 70-67 with just under four minutes left in the third quarter. But New York scored seven of the next 10 points to lead 77-70 going into the final period.

Michigan native Glen Rice hit back-to-back jumpers to open the fourth quarter to give the Knicks an 81-70 advantage. The Pistons got no closer than the final margin.

"There is nothing frustrating about tonight," Stackhouse said. "We played a really good team that hit shots and made plays. That team is better than us."

Houston had 16 points in the second quarter and Rice totaled 18 for New York, which won for the 10th time in 11 games. The strong play by Rice was a surprise for both teams, since he was hampered with a sore left foot.

"The last three games, he has been hobbled," Van Gundy said. "But he has found a way to play very well. And you have to give him a lot of credit. That is hard to do."

Chris Childs had seven assists while Houston and Larry Johnson each grabbed six rebounds. The Knicks connected on 9-of-19 3-pointers, including five by Houston. Kurt Thomas, starting in place of Camby, had 10 points and five rebounds.

Joe Smith was the only other Piston in double figures with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Detroit fell for the seventh time in its last eight outings and is now 1-18 when trailing at the half.

"We know we have to play our `A' game to beat them and they have to miss shots," Stackhouse said. "We had that bad start in the second quarter again. We have to find a way to end that because we are not good at coming from behind."

The Knicks held their opponent under 100 points for the 32nd straight time, an NBA record.
