Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce scored seven of his 23 points in the final six minutes as the Boston Celtics survived a second-half meltdown to hold on for an 83-82 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Celtics managed just 32 points in the second half but grabbed an 83-82 lead on Pierce's runner in the lane with 1:07 remaining.

Boston has alternated wins and losses in its last seven games and improved to 4-4 under interim coach Jim O'Brien. The Celtics completed a 2-2 West Coast swing with a 94-91 loss at Golden State on Sunday.

"This is a big-time win," O'Brien said. "Coming from the West Coast to the East Coast, it's usually the most difficult game, the first one coming back against a team that disrupted our offense because of their size. So, I am extremely pleased about getting this victory."

The Hawks took an 82-81 lead on Jason Terry's jumper with 2:15 left but did not score again. They hurt themselves with consecutive 24-second violations in the final two minutes.

After Boston's Eric Williams, who scored 16 points, missed a jumper with 22 seconds left, the Hawks set up for the final shot. They got the ball into the hands of Terry, who went 1-on-1 against Antoine Walker.

The Celtics' forward came up with a crucial defensive play, poking the ball out of bounds with 2.1 seconds left. The Hawks maintained possession but had to inbound from mid-court and were unable to get off a shot as Terry's desperation 3-pointer came after the buzzer.

"The ball is in my hands 75 percent of the time," Terry said. "I've just got to take better care of the ball. Two of the last three possessions, the plays were for me. I just didn't get the job done."

Walker made up for a dismal game offensively as he scored just 11 points and 3-of-19 shooting. He and Pierce (7-of-19) were a combined 10-of-38 from the field.

"He (Walker) wants to win as bad as anyone else and it showed with his defense in the last three minutes as he stepped it up," Pierce said.

Boston got solid play from its point guards as Randy Brown scored 16 points and backup Milt Palacio added 10.

"One guy can have a bad day," Pierce said. "The rest will step it up with the balance that we showed tonight."

Dion Glover scored 15 points and Lorenzen Wright added 13 and 14 rebounds for Atlanta, which suffered its fourth straight loss. Dikembe Mutumbo collected 12 points and 18 boards for the Hawks.

Atlanta was able to erase a 10-point first-half deficit despite committing 27 turnovers that Boston converted into 36 points. The Celtics kept the Hawks in the game, however, by shooting just 38 percent (32-of-84).

Down 51-43 at the half, Atlanta held Boston to just 14 points in the third period to close within 65-61. Chris Crawford put the Hawks up, 68-67, one of six lead changes in the final nine minutes.

After Pierce's 3-pointer gave the Celtics a 76-73 lead with 6:10 left, the Hawks responded to tie it, 78-78, on Alan Henderson's jumper with 4:21 to play. Atlanta managed just four points thereafter.

"We had a chance to win the ballgame," Mutumbo said. "We turned the ball over."

Pierce's two foul shots made it 80-78 with 4:02 to go before the Hawks again pulled even on Terry's jumper with 2:53 remaining. After Pierce hit 1-of-2 from the line 17 seconds later, Atlanta took its final lead on another jumper by Terry.
