Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Nate McMillan and Gary Payton would get along just fine if the Seattle SuperSonics played the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers every night.

Payton scored 34 points in his second game since being suspended by the team and the SuperSonics rolled to their third straight win over the troubled Lakers, 91-80.

Tabbed as a battle between teams in turmoil, the game belonged to the Sonics, who have won all three meetings with Los Angeles since McMillan took over for former Seattle coach Paul Westphal.

"We're aggressive against them, and like I said, it's easy to get up for the Lakers," McMillan said. "They're the world champions, got two of the best players in the league and I think some of our defensive schemes against them we are really executing and carrying out."

The Lakers have lost consecutive games for the first time since December 12-13 and are 3-3 since the dispute between superstars Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal became public knowledge.

"I was disappointed in our effort tonight as a basketball team," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Not that we didn't hustle and not that we didn't do things defensively. It was the professionalism of taking care of business. ... I just thought that the communications on the court were limited."

Payton, whose argument with McMillan last week got him suspended from a 98-93 home loss to Minnesota on Thursday, scored 30 points in a 109-107 triumph over Sacramento on Saturday and was even better Tuesday night.

The 6-4 All-Star point guard hit 11-of-19 shots, 11-of-14 free throws, handed out six assists and grabbed six rebounds in 43 minutes.

"We just play well against them -- I don't know," Payton said. "I mean we've just been lucky for the last three times. It might change when we play them the last time. But right now, I think we just played well against this team and I'm glad we did play well against them."

O'Neal scored 29 points and Bryant added 21 on just 5-of-19 shooting for the Lakers, who host Seattle on March 11 in the last regular-season meeting between the teams.

McMillan's second game on the Seattle sideline was a 121-88 dismantling of the Lakers on November 30. Payton scored 27 points in that contest and burned Los Angeles for 25 more at the Staples Center on December 8. The Lakers won three of four meetings with the Sonics last season.

Former Laker Ruben Patterson scored 19 points and Brent Barry added 13 for Seattle, which shot 44 percent (29-of-66) and limited Los Angeles to 35 percent (28-of-81). The Sonics held a 50-40 advantage on the boards.

"They demolished us on the boards," O'Neal said. "We have to do a better job of containing and we just have to have better team defense. Once we do that, we can get back on track."

Vin Baker's 18-footer with three seconds left in the first quarter snapped a 23-23 tie and sparked a 9-0 run that Payton finished with a 3-pointer and layup to make it 32-23 with 8:45 remaining in the first half. Seattle did not trail thereafter.

"Well, you know we feel like we're a championship contender just as well as anybody else," Baker said. "I know our record doesn't show it right now but we feel like we can play with the elite teams in this league."

A dunk by O'Neal brought the Lakers within 59-54 with 3:03 left in the third quarter but the Sonics were quick to answer. Rashard Lewis hit a 19-footer and Barry drilled a 3-pointer as Seattle opened a 64-54 cushion.

Payton snapped a 2 1/2-minute scoreless drought for both teams in the fourth quarter when he converted a three-point play to make it 67-57 with 9:31 to play.
