Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Juwan Howard made sure the Washington Wizards did not give this one away.

Howard's baseline jumper with 1.8 seconds remaining gave the Wizards a 97-95 victory over the slumping Charlotte Hornets and just their second winning streak of the season.

"I've been waiting on this time right here," Howard said. "I was mad at myself last time when I had an opportunity (to make the winning shot) against Seattle (on January 10). But I said I was going to hit this one, no matter what."

Howard scored 22 points and made several big plays down the stretch. However, none was bigger than his winning shot.

After a layup by Jamal Mashburn tied it, 95-95, with 15 seconds to play, Howard took a pass in the low post, spun to the left baseline and fired a 13-footer over P.J. Brown to give the Wizards the lead.

Elden Campbell's 17-footer at the buzzer was way off, giving Washington (9-34) consecutive wins for the first time since December 31-January 2. Team president Michael Jordan was on hand for just the seventh time this season.

"I would've been very disappointed if (coach Leonard Hamilton) didn't call for the play to go into my hands," Howards said. "I just feel that shows confidence in me. And, of course, I had confidence in my teammates that we were going to get this victory tonight. It feels good. It feels great to get this win."

"What we wanted to do was get him the ball and if they double-teamed he had to kick it out to the guy at the top," Wizards coach Leonard Hamilton said. "They elected not to and we felt comfortable. We were good with him. They executed perfectly."

David Wesley scored 25 points and rallied the Hornets from an eight-point deficit in the final three minutes. But it was not enough to prevent Charlotte from losing for the 11th time in 14 games.

"It was a bad loss against a team that was struggling, a team that wanted it more than we did," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We have to approach the game with a pure heart and mental toughness, and right now we've lost both."

The Hornets fell to 1-2 against the Wizards and became the first team to lose twice to them.

"Each player has to look at themselves and ask what am I doing or not doing to try to get this thing done," Silas said. "I can't just change the lineup. This is the same lineup that had us 20-9, so that's not it at all. We have reached a low point in our season right now, and we've got to find a way to dig out of it."

The Wizards never trailed in the fourth quarter. Howard had a pair of free throws, tracked down a loose ball that led to a layup by Felipe Lopez and made a jumper to give Washington a 91-83 lead with 2:56 to go.

Two foul shots apiece by P.J. Brown and Wesley cut the deficit in half before Jahidi White bulled inside for a layup to give the Wizards a 93-87 lead. Wesley had a three-point play and a 3-pointer around two free throws by White to pull the Hornets within 95-93 with 39 seconds left before an offensive foul on Lopez set up Mashburn's tying basket.

Richard Hamilton scored 20 points before fouling out for the Wizards, who shot 51 percent (37-of-72) from the field and had six players in double figures. White added 13 points and Lopez 12.

"Playing a close game like that and hitting a big shot does so much for the team's cconfidence and the team's morale," Leonard Hamilton said. "Having so many guys step up and make contributions I think says a lot about the spirit of these guys."

Washington won despite being without a true point guard. Rod Strickland remains sidelined and Chris Whitney sat out with a left ankle sprain.

"Rip (Hamilton) did a great job for us being our floor leader," Howard said. "He's been good for us all season long. When he went down with foul trouble and then fouled out, we missed his presence out there. But Felipe stepped in and held us together."

Mashburn scored 20 points and Campbell added 12 for Charlotte, which shot just 43 percent (35-of-81) but made 9-of-15 from the arc. Washington missed all three of its 3-pointers.

The Wizards took the lead for good with an 11-4 run late in the third quarter. White scored five points and Tyrone Nesby four before Lopez cruised for a layup and a 77-70 advantage with 44 seconds left. Campbell made two free throws before the end of the period.

The Hornets led by as many as six points before settling for a 53-49 halftime lead. Mashburn scored 12 points and Wesley had 10 to offset Hamilton's 14.
