Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks wasted no time sending the Vancouver Grizzlies to their sixth straight loss.

Nowitzki had a double-double in a huge first half and finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and six assists as the Mavericks roared to a 120-83 victory over the Grizzlies.

The Mavericks raced to a 32-23 lead after one quarter and 71-43 at halftime as Nowitzki collected 15 points and 10 boards. In their highest-scoring first half of the season, Dallas shot 67 percent (30-of-45) from the field and had just four turnovers.

"That was great," Nowitzki said. "That's what we knew we had to do and we did a great job. They hung around to the midway of the first quarter. But then we kind of picked it up a little more and kind of jumped on them. We kept on substituting and everybody who came in played well."

Steve Nash had 21 points and seven assists and Michael Finley scored 20 points for the Mavs, who bounced back nicely from a 114-98 home loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday for their fourth win in five games.

No regulars played the fourth quarter for Dallas, which led by as many as 40 points. It outclassed Vancouver, which is mired in its fourth losing streak this season of at least five games. The Grizzlies also have lost 11 in a row on the road.

The Mavs thoroughly avenged a 101-74 loss in Vancouver on November 8 that was the biggest of the season for the Grizzlies. Dallas collected its highest point total and victory margin.

Vancouver was coming off a 110-77 loss Tuesday at San Antonio, after which coach Sidney Lowe said, "I want our guys to feel the pain and the embarrassment and not want that to ever happen again." Apparently, his players were not listening.

"I'm a little concerned and these next few games are going to be crucial to see how we are going to play because we're just not playing hard," Lowe said. "We're not playing together. It's not a team. It's just not a team out there right now."

The Grizzlies never led but were within 23-21 before the Mavs closed the first quarter with a 9-2 burst. Nowitzki had a three-point play and Christian Laettner added a pair of hoops.

The surge continued in the second quarter. Hubert Davis scored five points in an 11-2 run that extended the advantage to 43-25 with 8:04 remaining.

Nowitzki and Davis continued to connect from outside. They had 3-pointers on consecutive possesions to push the lead to 56-31 with 4:52 left.

In the second period, Davis made all five shots, including three 3-pointers, and scored 13 points. Nowitzki added 12.

"We got some easy baskets on offense and everything started flowing for us," Davis said.

The Mavs led 99-64 after three quarters and the final period was entirely garbage time.

"We're not that good," Lowe said. "We got beat by a better team, better players who wanted it more and it showed. They executed, they played defense, they played on both ends. Nash went wherever he wanted to go, penetrating, hit shots, got people open. Finley made plays. Nowitzki made plays. They're just a better team."

Davis scored 19 points and Trent added 10 for Dallas, which shot 52 percent (46-of-88), made 23-of-25 free throws and committed just eight turnovers.

"Hubert played big," Finley said. "He made some big shots when we were continuing to increase our lead. Then when he was in there at the end he continued to hit big shots. That's the kind of guy Hubert is."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Mike Bibby and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf scored 13 points each for Vancouver, which shot less than 38 percent (28-of-74) and had 17 turnovers leading to 31 points.
