Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett had 16 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to their fifth straight victory, 109-100 over the Orlando Magic.

Garnett made just 6-of-15 shots but his teammates more than made up for his sub-par effort from the field.

Wally Szczerbiak tied his season-high with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting and Terrell Brandon added 19 on 8-of-10 from the field.

"We had a lot of guys who gave us some points," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "Garnett didn't score much, but he might be the only guy in the league that doesn't have to score 24-26 points to dominate a game."

LaPhonso Ellis provided a major spark off the bench, scoring a season-high 24 points and grabbing eight rebounds for the Timberwolves, who shot 55 percent (41-of-75).

"I just feel like I'm doing my job," Ellis said. "It's not always going to show up in the boxscore. Tonight I had shot opportunities, and they went down."

"The reason we are winning is Terrell is being aggressive and the bench in giving productive minutes with hustle," Garnett said.

Brandon has been key to Minnesota's success, shooting 56 percent (43-of-77) during the winning streak.

"I'm happy for Terrell and the flow he's created for himself, Garnett said. "He's playing extremely well. He's certainly a Player of the Week candidate."

The Timberwolves put away the game with a 15-5 run midway through the fourth quarter, opening their largest lead at 97-85 with 3:34 remaining.

Six different Minnesota players scored during the run, including Szczerbiak, who scored the first four and capped it with a short jumper.

Orlando made a 20-10 run in the third quarter to take a 76-75 lead with 1:15 remaining. Minnesota regained the lead and held a three-point edge entering the final period.

Tracy McGrady had 28 points and eight rebounds but made just 11-of-29 shots and 5-of-12 from the line.

"It going to be tough for me every night, because it's going to be everyone coming after me," McGrady said. "They played great help defense. I took 29 shots, but there is going to be nights like that. I can accept that."

Darrell Armstrong scored 21 points and Bo Outlaw added 12 and 13 rebounds for Orlando, which shot just 40 percent (37-of-92) and had its two-game winning streak snapped.

Orlando was coming off three straight overtime games, including a double-overtime contest against Toronto on Tuesday, but still managed to keep it close.

"That is the heart of this team," McGrady said. "It was just a one-day trip, a three-hour flight, after three overtimes in a row. It's mentally and physically tough, but we hung in there."

Minnesota used a 17-9 run in the second quarter to build a 53-43 lead with three minutes to go in the half. The Wolves held a 57-51 lead at halftime.

"My goal was to keep it to a one-point game at halftime, survive the third, and then steal the fourth," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "But obviously that didn't happen."
