Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Maybe Jason Kidd's absence wasn't the reason the Phoenix Suns were struggling.

With Kidd back on the floor, the Suns endured a miserable third quarter during an embarrassing 99-83 loss to the Boston Celtics.

The Celtics closed the third on an 18-3 run and held the Suns to 12 points in the period en route to their most lopsided victory of the season.

Kidd was expected to miss Phoenix's entire six-game road trip but rejoined the team in Boston. He did not start but had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 31 minutes off the bench.

"Tonight wasnt one of my `A' games," Kidd said. "But I'll get back in the swing of things as I start to play more."

Kidd missed the previous four games after he was arrested on January 19 on a misdemeanor assault charge for striking his wife. He originally opted to stay home to try and mend his relationship with his wife, Joumana.

"I needed to get back to life and the way it was," he said. "My family comes first. we worked on our problems and then I decided to play basketball."

Kidd was booed by the Boston crowd, evidence that the recent events have marred his reputation.

"The fans expressed themselves every time I touched the ball," Kidd said. "That's what they are here to do, support their team. It doesn't bother me."

The Suns were 1-3 without him and have lost six of their last 10 games overall.

"The team is going through a lot right now, we've got to play with a sense of urgency," Phoenix guard Mario Elie said. "It's not easy in the West, we have to get mentally tough."

Antoine Walker had 29 points and 13 rebounds and Paul Pierce added 28 and nine for the Celtics. The frontcourt duo combined to shoot 20-of-38 from the floor, 12-of-13 at the line and 5-of-8 from behind the arc.

Depite going 1-of-7 from the floor, Eric Williams made all eight of his free throws and scored 10 points off the bench. Vitaly Potapenko added 13 for Boston, which has won two in a row for the first time since December 21-23.

The Suns trailed 45-44 at halftime, but shot 22 percent (4-of-18) in the decisive third quarter.

"I'm very proud of our defensive effort," interim coach Jim O'Brien said. "It was as good as it can get for a half."

The Celtics led 54-53 after Kidd sank two free throws with 6:33 to play in the third quarter. Walker followed with a short jumper that sparked a 12-0 Boston run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Pierce.

Rookie Jake Tsakalidis ended the Phoenix drought when he made 1-of-2 free throws with 53.5 seconds left. Potapenko buried two from the line on the other end answered a jumper by Kidd with an 18-footer for a 70-56 lead.

Williams made two free throws with two seconds left to complete Boston's third-quarter onslaught.

Pierce drained a jumper to open the fourth quarter, giving Boston its biggest lead, 74-56.

The resurgent Celtics improved to 5-4 under O'Brien, their best nine-game stretch since November 11-28.

Clifford Robinson paced Phoenix with 22 points but made just 8-of-18 shots. Shawn Marion had 14 points and 10 rebounds, but was beat repeatedly by Pierce and Walker on the defensive end.

"When you only have 10 guys, everyone has to play hard," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Shawn's `D' has been very questionable for about a month now. I'm having a hard time figuring out who to put him on."

Tony Delk added 13 points on 4-of-14 shooting for the Suns, who shot 39 percent (31-of-79), including 28 percent (6-of-21) from 3-point range.
